Thanks Stew. I've always had a sentimental fondness for the Art Deco Elgins,Bulovas, Gruen and Hamiltons. These timepieces all had the high end Made in USA watch movements. An Elgin De Luxe 17 Jewel with an Adjusted in 4 Position hand wound movement,is a rare treat in today's watch market. Remember that in those days, the technology was expensive but the cost of manual labor was cheap. If a watch company were to produce this similar movement in today's watch market. I can safely say that the cost of production and manufacturing would be astronomical. The cost of manual labor is expensive but the technology is cheap. During the 1940's and 1950's the Federal Government in the U.S. imposed import duties on watches entering the country with "Adjusted in 2 Positions." Therefore, many Swiss brands wrote Unadjusted on the movement to be exempt from import duty. A Good Example is: The 1945-50 Longines Caliber 9L was a 17 Jewel Unadjusted hand wound. This is actually a movement that is Adjusted in 2 Positions. Cheers, Simon Last edited on Mon Sep 6th, 2010 03:02 pm by Simon_Leung |
