I don't believe they require it. It just makes it easy for me to pack/ship it that way. I wouldn't want it shipped just in a small box with plastic/paper wrapped around it. I am just surprised that they kept it. When I originally purchased this watch it came in a nice big rose wood box with a glass dome. Thats why I am surprised they shipped it back to me the way they did.
