 Get a light green mat to work on that cures a lot of sins.  Bergoen makes one for $13 or so has adhesive back that is great for a bench but they have some that do not have the back and that will help with screws.  You can get job trays, I use them in all of the businesses that deal with customer work orders and they help us out allot.
