Here's what I would do to keep the look of the original that you like.  Take the strap to a "leather shop" of a quality shoe maker.  Have him remove the existing leather strip and put another on to meet your needs.  Understand that the holes will need to be burned thru the nylon with a small hot nail so that the nylon fuses and does not unravel!
