I'm sure the reason for the exhibition back was to help fight the quartz watch by showing people the craftsmanship of the mechanical watch movement, but who started it? Was it Swatch?
Goes back way further than you might think!
It all started with pocket watches; salesmen traveling the country to peddle watches to department stores, jewelry stores and watchmakers all over the country wanted to show off the movements and decoration / regulation. So those "salesmen samples" were the first to have the solid casebacks or hinged backs replaced with crystals to show off the movment while keeping it dust proof. :)
And watchmakers that take pride in their work loved it. No wonder it became popular again; why hide those beauties?
