Goes back way further than you might think! It all started with pocket watches; salesmen traveling the country to peddle watches to department stores, jewelry stores and watchmakers all over the country wanted to show off the movements and decoration / regulation. So those "salesmen samples" were the first to have the solid casebacks or hinged backs replaced with crystals to show off the movment while keeping it dust proof. :) And watchmakers that take pride in their work loved it.
