My best guess is that the red cap is primarily to preserve the "look" of the original.

Functionally, the red cap on the Ocean7 will unscrew to vent a He release valve (since this watch will be rated for saturation dive depths).

Actually, the red cap mimics the bezel lock release button of the vintage PloProf.
