Doesn't sound right to me. That is a very common battery for one thing, and I can't imagine what would be so special about its replacement. Maybe putting the back on would require a special tool this guy doesn't have or something.
But, I too have put in a number of batteries in chronos and regular watches and $40 seems excessive. Luminox charges $35 for a lithium battery replacement. However, it is a 10 year battery and they replace the seal and check for water resistance, etc.
