I find that taking pics outside using the natural sunlight turns out pretty good.  It is tough to get good lighting inside unless you diffuse the light like what was mentioned.  Also, some cameras take good close-up pics of watches and some just do not.  I have one camera that will just not take good pics of watches.  It does take some practice, and only a small percentage of the pictures turn out just right.  I recommend getting a light tent for inside pics.  You can buy one that is decent at Wal-Mart for about $50.  I haven't used a Tripod, but it would probably be fun to play around with one.
