Non-radioactive lumination, like that found on 95% of watches, is passive. Basically, it gets 'charged' by light, natrual or otherwise. It doesn't take long for it to 'charge'. So, if its a bright sunny day and you are outside for a few minutes, then come inside to a dim area, you will see it glowing like a beacon. After a few minutes, it will gradually fade from its initial brightness. The Seiko will go the distance, meaning, if you were in a dark room, and looked at it after 8 hours (like sleeping), it will still be visible to your eye. Make sense?
