 Swiss Watch Decision Delayed

The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry voted in favor of the Swiss government tightening restrictions as to watches showing “Swiss Made” labels. But the Swiss Federal Council won’t be handing down a decision on this until April 2008.

What does this mean? The new Federation proposal would require that:

  • 80% of the costs of mechanical watch production occur in Switzerland,
    versus the current 50.1%
  • 60% of the costs of electronic watch production occur in Switzerland,
    versus the current 50.1%
Factored into this production would be Swiss prototype development and all technical construction. Materials, stones and batteries would not be included.
