I was in 5th grade when this happened, and remember it well. My dad and I built a crystal set and I'd sit up til all hours of the night listening to newly discovered "Rock and Roll." A little while back my babysitter had bought over her record player, along with some Elvis records to play (after my parents had left for the evening). I remember that listening to "All Shook Up" and "Hound Dog" was a revalation.

So, I heard the first news reports on the plane crash on my crystal set upstairs in my bedroom. Indeed, a sad day.

The rest of the story is that Waylon Jennings declined to ride with Holly that night and took the bus instead. The band was heading to Grand Forks, ND, I believe, and the dancehall where they were to play had to find an emergency replacement for Holly: Bobby Vee, of all people. One of the local Twin Cities radio personalities was to be the MC for the Holly show, and told the story of that night many times on WCCO Radio in MPLS.
