I have 6 pocket watches, a couple of which are Elgin's. The thing about pocket watches is that during the depression alot of the gold cases were replaced by steel for the money, so their are alot of watches out there not in there original case. Therefore the movement becomes the important thing. Open it up and take the serial number and use this site. http://elginwatches.org/databases/elgin_sn_intro.html This will tell you when it was made and a description of the movement.
