Hello, I'm not real sure how your friends owning $5k watches is a problem for you but let's take another track. It does read like you've got some watch experience and would lean towards a mechanical/automatic movement. Correct? There are plenty of folks here who will help you drill down into style and brands, but we'll need alittle more info. In addition to hucky's questions, do you have a budget? My advice: If you're going to be working in a kitchen with oils, sauces, flames and all sorts of impliments of destruction... I'd go with a diver style watch with a stainless steel bracelet. Robust, water resistant, simply rinse and go. Perhaps something with a low profile to avoid the dings that will happen in close quarters with lots of activity?
