Great post and follow up comments, abrizz.  Boy does this topic bring up memories.  I think I'll start a small knife collection.  I've always had a passing interest in them since I was a kid, but never took the time to learn much about them.

I recall saving my allowance and shoveling driveways and whatnot to find a way to pay for a Schrade Uncle Henry, single blade folding knife.  Probably about 3 inches or so closed.  Heavy.  Purpose built.  My first real knife purchase.  It came with a beautiful brown leather sheath/pouch.  It was my constant companion on my fishing and camping trips growing up.  I eventually upgraded to a larger Buck, fixed blade that brought me through my teens.  Camping, hunting, fishing and etc.  I lived near a lot of woods and a good size brook/stream with great fishing.  My friends and I spent many nights camping by the side of the brook with our packs, sleeping bags, a fire… and each one of us with a knife.  No-one in my family was into this stuff, but it came naturally to me and my friends.  Learning to love the woods and be reasonably self sufficient.  This ultimately led to a passion for backpacking and mountain climbing.

Fast forward...oh… 30 years or so.  I'm now married with kids, pets, house, and etc.  I bought a camper to help the family enjoy being in the woods and am getting them into hiking.  As I was getting ready for my first camping season with the family a few years back, I was going through a bunch of boxes.  Didn't I come across the Schrade and Buck knives?!  I don't think I’d seen those knives in more than 2 decades.  I dropped everything and smiled at the memories they brought back to me.  Over the next week or so, I took a little time cleaning them up.  Especially the Schrade with the brass ends being all green and oxidized and etc.  Got them cleaned, oiled, and sharpened.  Reconditioned the leather.  I keep them in a kitchen cabinet so I’ll never forget about them again and for easy access.

Maybe someday, one of the kids will get as much from them as I did.  Tall order since I have two daughters...  but you never know.

Anyway, thanks for the post and letting me blabber on about nothing.
