I purchased this on the bay...a Croton Aquamedico, a mid-20th century doctors watch.  The case is either solid 10k or 14k gold.  The original gold caseback was replaced at some time with a steel blank.  Handwind movement that appears to be keeping good time.

Question...have any of you sold gold watches for scrap gold?  I am underwhelmed at this watch and am curious whether I'd be better off scrapping it.  Also, anyone have an idea of what this scrap gold might be worth?  Watch case is maybe 31mm.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Erik

Erik,

they scrap by the gram so depends on how much is there, after the movement is removed Etc. With prices i think you should be able to get at least $9 a gram

Thank you Tony for the information.  Is there any market for the movement?  I'd prefer to give it away to someone on 3T who might use it, if I do decide to scrap the gold...so let me know if anyone is interested.

E

These watches have a sweet 17 jewel movement in them and are very dependable. Here is a pic of one I found.

I also found one with a SS case at Finer Times to give you an idea of what they are going for. I've bought several pieces from them and their prices are usually in the ball park. I think the one above with a gold case is priced way to high.

If the movement is running well and shows no signs of abuse or rust. You may want to hold on to it and see if you can run across a good dial and case.

Nice watch which was made under about a dozen other names as well during that period....Swiss 17j handwind movement that was used by all the Swiss manufacturers in the 30's and 40's much like the Unitas is used today....eBay has quite a few and this one is local here in Ohio(see link).....if scrapping for Gold remember it is 10K not pure gold so as Tony says you'll be lucky to get $9.00 a gram for the case....might be worth keeping imho as gold polishes up like newhand6.gif

A big thank you to Tony, Charlie and Oscar for your feedback on this watch.  I'm going to hold on to this watch and see if I can bring it back to its original state.

Thanks again,

Erik
