Is it difficult to remove the date magnifier on a watch? Can it be removed, or do you just have to replace the crystal?

I have heard that if it is a glass crystal with an acrylic magnifier glued on that the magnifier can be knocked off with an exacto type blade and then the residual glue clean up with a little nail polish remover. If its all acrylic I think you need to knock it off then polish out the spot it sat on.  Might be easier to just replace though
