3T,

I am hoping you savy watch connoisseurs can help me choose my first orange faced automatic.

Summer is coming and I want to add an orange face to my collection.  The biggest problem with my search is that I'd like to keep the color scheme to simply orange and stainless.  Most of the orange faced dials I find have a black bezel.  I'd like to keep the color black isolated to either the numbers or hands only.

Anyone have an opinion on this?  The below Steinhart is a good example of what I'm looking for, but it isn't perfect as I'd rather have a stainless bracelet and I'd like to keep it under $500.  The Orange Monster is another good example, but I already have the Black Monster.  I'd rather explore some new options.

Here's my criteria;

  1. automatic
  2. 40mm or larger
  3. metal bracelet
  4. $500 or less

Thanks for your thoughts on this!

NEEDS MORE COLOR!

Heres what I just got.  On sale for $200 at jtv.  43mm case auto and exhibition back.  The orange dial kicks butt imo.  You would have to put on a bracelet if thats what you really want.

You could get in line for the Reef Ranger with a orange dial. ;)

How about an orange Sumo? Don't think it comes on a bracelet though... (Pix cribbed from Higuchi)

Or Ti Sammi? (Pix from higuchi)

Zeno Army Diver is a good choice, I really like the bracelet and the crown has grown on me.  It may be a little over the price point but Marc (IW) has always been a good vendor to deal with.

It comes with screwed links and the shape of each link is similar to the Oceanaut Pacha, if that helps any.

Thanks fellas. These are all options I have never considered before.

A couple follow-up questions if you don't mind;

1.  How do the Vostok movements compare with Seiko or Miyota movements for example?  I have no experience with the Russians.

2.  Anybody know the introductory price on the Reef Ranger?

3.  I like the Zeno, but have never heard of an ETA 2452.  How does it compare with the workhorse ETA 2824?

Thanks

The Russian movements aren't as smooth or refined imho. That's a bit of an intangible and just my "feel". They also have no true quickset date which the Japanese movements provide. In the Seiko range only the Sumo hacks.

I thought the Reef Ranger was going to be right in your price range with a nice 3T intro price though haven't heard much as of late.

I also think the Zeno comes with the 2824 in most cases. I don't know the specifics between the movements but do know the 2452 does not hack.

You really have a lot of good options here!! Thumbsup3.gif

on the Zeno - as Eric will tell you too, its luck of the draw. You can get a 2824, a 2452, and I think even another variant. The watch is adaptable to a few different movements.

But an eta is an eta, so no bones to pick there.

Marc

The Zeno's are a luck of the draw, but they all are great movements are are as dependable as the day is long, because they are all real ETA movements not some ebauche.

As far as the Russian watches from what I have heard they have been tightening up the fit of the teeth on all of the gears and the more consistent finish and sizing on the jewels and etc.  I have not run one on the Witshi to be sure, so take it for what it is worth.

Orient's rock I have one I work in every time I get my hands dirty and it has never let me down.  Pulled up 2,800ft of hard wood flooring over the past few months and that is hard on any mechanical.
