Hi all - there is some discussion and a coupla CAD drawings of the new Omega Ploprof re-issue on WUS. The CAD images show it to have a gold anodised bezel lock with matching 12 o'clock lume dot. New fangled crown protector lock, and other than that, its price is about $7000 plus at retail. Have a look at WUS and go to either the Omega discussion or the Diver discussion fora. The CAD drawings are for people like me who think better with an image than we do with words!! It can apparently be had on the new Omega rubber or on Milanese mesh. Darn that is a funky (good) lookin thing! What do you guys think about it? I had better start saving now... that price for the new one is a lot more than the $200 I paid for my old Ploprof (new) in 1973!!! Would make a terrific companion for my incoming LM-7 - no?? Look forward to your views. Cheers - IanM |

Is it bad form to post links to other forums here? If so, please delete: http://forums.watchuseek.com/showthread.php?t=149954 I participated in that discussion. I never really understood the fanatacism associated with the design, despite the history behind the watch. --Steve |

Hey Pax and Steve Unsure about the rule re links - that's why I used "code". Steve - the fanatacism is interesting - isn't it. What amazed me most about the Ocean7 desing/copy process was the "I refuse to have a copy watch - so let's make it eaxctly the same" argument. Hell - all I wanted was a watch that paid tribute to the original Ploprof, without claiming to be one. We are still not sure when the O7 will be made available to those who placed pre-orders taken about (10?) months ago... myself included. Nevertheless - just wanted opinions on the upcoming re-issue. A closer look reveals different bezel grip, 1200m (!!!) rating on the dial, a rubber strap that looks to read "Ploprof" and a helium release valve (??) under the bezel lock. If these CAD drawings are accurate - the big O is going all out to make the opposition (and any imitators) look second rate. I love the design, Steve - I appreciate the history, but they are not (for me) everyday wearers. More like the tool you wear when you actually DO go diving, or that conversation piece you want to use to introduce yourself to non-WISs!!! Whatever we think - it looks like it will be a terrific piece of engineering. And it just halved the value of my incoming O7 IMHO Oh - secret squirrel - have a look at this exact link for drawings, Pax: http://forums.watchuseek.com/showthread.php?p=1008256#poststop If inappropriate, please delete-a-mundo! appropriate links are fine Ian...those that we do not allow are filtered out through are system automaticallyhand6.gif I personally would rather spend the $7000. on a ploprof re-release from Omega( I passed on 2 a couple years ago for $1800. a piece!...DOH) than a homage or replica O7 yourock.gif I haven't heard a word about the O7 homage....wasn't it supposed to be done already?...and with Omega coming forward with this release of the original ploprof will O7 still be able to make their's without breaking any design infringements or patents face4.gif |

Hi O - many thanks for the update re links - glad I didn't infringe! O, the O7 is purely an homage. Latest news is that it will run a Selitta movement, have Pantone 282 (??) as the dial colour, have a white surround to the date window, black numbers on white background for the date, slight variation to the case blank of the Ploprof, an aluminum bezel lock (maybe red) and be supplied on rubber - with the SS bracelet to come later at additional cost. Places in the queue have apparently been sold at a premium - but clever O7 decided that warranties would not be transferrable from the name of the original person who made the deposit - making loyal clients out of the potential speculators with one flick of the pen. I don't mind - I bought one for myself and nor for instant speculator resale. But if it gets here and I hate it - on the block it will go. I wouldn't expect a loss from a quick sale - but I wouldn't be exp[ecting to make money on it , either. As best I can recall, the Omega patents on the Ploprof were for crown guard, case monobloc construction and the bezel lock - and if I am not mistaken all of those patents expired. The new Omega Ploprof 1200m has a new configuration for the crown guard (very clever and very toolish) a new combined bezel lock / HRV (which is again a very clever piece of engineering) and what looks to be an identical 24mm lug width version of the 1970s Ploprof case. There is enough innovation to call it a new model IMHO. But hey - I am working from CAD drawings - don't shoot me if I am wrong!! As for the LM-7 - the release date keeps slipping backwards. Latest is that it will be "sometime ... by the end of summer...". I am still looking forward to getting the watch, but the shine has worn off a little and now, for me, it has probably become a short term thing rather than a keeper. As for the infringement thing, I guess that if Mitch from O7 doesn't call it a Ploprof, a Seamaster, or an Omega - a duck is not a duck! You can't infringe an expired copyright, and Omega have innovated the new items sufficiently to be able to patent new designs IMHO. Like you - I reckon the Omega version will outclass and outperform the LM-7. This new Omega might even become a future collectors item. I don't believe that the O7 will be every bit as good - but we are talking under $1000 versus $7000 here. A bit like trying to claim that your Corvette is a Ferrari because both had a type of red paint on them. Wrong comparison, I know - but you get my drift. Chris - that's why Ocean7 decided to make an homage in the first place - most of the look for a fraction of the price. Not trying to claim the O7 is a Ploprof, only that O7 make a watch very similar to the Ploprof for less money. Both the Omega and the O7 will probably have a following, I guess. I am, for at least a short while, gonna be in both camps until I decide which one or both to keep. It will be interesting... I have an incoming MKII Stingray 50 with Bund dial and a red-tipped second hand. I bought it cos I love the look of the watch. After deciding that I liked it and that I wanted one, I also discovered that it looks similar to the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. Different watches - love 'em both for different reasons. But I don't think one is trying to actually BE the other. Is the O7 a worse watch because it mimics a more well-known icon of the watch world? Whaddya think? Cheers all! IanM hand6.gifhand6.gif |

The day I spend 7K on a watch is the day I get my **** handed to me  Heck, I can't spend 1K on a watch without being in the doghouse but then again I am having too much fun with my $500 and less ones. I wanted to get in on the O7 homage but honestly I can't see me wearing it enough to justify the cost as much as I like and appreciate the design. If I was still diving then I would have rationalized it, but that activity ended a long time ago! Interesting points raised in that thread about the "new" rich... Cheers, Griff |

I hear ya zipp. And please don't think I am blessed with a huge dollar watch budget - that is sure not the truth. It will be a hell of a stretch for me to get the funds - but that's what motivates me to get rid of girlfriends and keep saving!! (no doghouse to worry about!!). I may not even get the funds before there is a sell-out or similar. But I will give it my best shot. I am committed to the Ocean 7 and I might have to leave it at that. I have many under $500 watches that I love to death and only a few above that mark. I don't trade that much - I buy cos I like 'em. I don't buy cos of their prices - I buy cos I want them. And I don't buy a lot. But I am so firmly hooked that it will never go away... Same thinking as O - if the original is there and it doesn't kill me to pay the price (or a heavily discounted price on the same item from a friendly AD - though I don't reckon there will be much negotiating on this new one), I would have the Omega over the imitator any day. But there are so many choices at that big dollar value - including THREE of my grail Chopard Mille Miglia white faced black sub-dial GMTs. Now there's a thought... Cheers - IanM |

1st, we usually have no problem linking to appropriate links from most forums. There are a few we won't link to, but, then again....I've never seen anything of worth in their posts other than, "Wow, I have 1000 posts".:D 2nd, take me to the shrink, but for some reason, I have never been able to get my head around Omega. I know they are supposed to be great watches, yadda, yadda, yadda, but, for the most part, they have simply not appealed to me, except for a few vintage pieces. When I do see one that grabs my attention, after looking at it several times, it just sort of goes blah to me. Maybe one of the nuns who were so thrilled with my behavior as a child beat me with one....I don't know! |

This watch has little appeal to me, but then I don't dive. I can think of a lot of watches I would rather have for $7K. |
