Why do some quartz watches cost a ton more than others, even when no precious metals or gemstones are used and the watch performs no functions other than basic time? For example, there are stainless steel quartz Bulgari watches that go between $2k and $3k. Now, I know Bulgari is a luxury designer and all that, but is that really all you're paying for? Are the insides any "better" than a quartz that costs $200? And if that's the case, are there "watch people" (in here or anywhere) who would consider spending that kind of money on a quartz? If not, then what kind of people are buying quartz Bulgaris? |

Yes there are grades or levels of quartz but most of the time you are paying for the brand name not the watch. ;) |

There are "better" quartz movements, such as the thermocompensated ETA quartz found in some Sinn, Breitling and other higher end watches...while these may be unique enough and offer technological advances worthy of a high price...that in no way explains why it is not uncommon at all to see Tag, Movado, etc charge crazy prices for watches with good quality but still inexpensive technically unspectacular movements...buyer beware I guess! |

Oh hell yes...some quartz movements can cost as much as $20 to $30...different backing plates, like metal or plastic. 0j to 20j+ (to operate the analog dials...but to me, the bottom line is that a quartz is a quartz is a quartz...and I don't care if it's accurate to 8 seconds a month or 8 seconds a year...IT AIN'T GOT NO SOUL!!! jmho

Ken, I am sensing a vague opinion in your mind about quartz watches, but I can't quite make it out...can you make your thoughts more clear? LOL! (sorry man, couldn't resist! LOL! ) |

Ken, I could not agree with you more!! I sold jewelry and worked as a mid-level jeweler for over 8 years and I never understood why anyone would pay a fistload of cash for any brand that was simply a quartz watch! I always did my very best to sell either automatics of any brand, Citizen Eco-Drives, and Seiko kenetics to the majority of my customers!! To be honest, the store made a killing off simply replacing batteries for people. The store would charge 9.95+Tax for each battery replaced. I did most of these battery change outs with a simple watch tools avialable to anyone on the web. I was simply amazed at the number of quartz replicas that I encountered...but back to the batteries. The store paid .12 cents per battery max...sometimes less depending on the market which showed a pure profit of $9.83 per watch. You do the math, that is one hell of a profit margin!! Tim. |

That's nothing...my boss used to take his Movado to a jeweler who would actually send it in to Movado for a battery change, said it took a couple weeks!!!! I hope they at least gave him the change for free! |
