3T, I really like the looks of this new Seiko model SKA383. It has that "Orsa-like" bezel that I just can't get enough of, especialy at 46mm . . . Unfortunately it uses a Seiko kinetic style mechanism. I understand the mechanics behind the movement, but what is the general concensus on them? Right now I'm exclusively an automatic man. Is it sacrilegious to stray from the course? ![]() Last edited on Thu Jun 19th, 2008 03:50 pm by glock24 |

These are for the folks looking for the best of both worlds. No battery changes needed due to rotor powered yet they have the accuracy of the quartz. And the power reserve is much longer too, up to 3 weeks some times. I had one a few years ago and a friends kid talked me out of it. I should get another one one of these days. ;) |

Is "Kinetic technology" a Seiko only option, or are their other companies who use this type of system? If so, who? |

Fossil is one that comes to mind off the top of my head. You may find this read interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_quartz |

this is my Festina Meca/Quartz Chrono....same as Kinetic in that it uses a capacitor to charge the batteryhand6.gif Attachment: Picture_007.jpg (Downloaded 53 times) |

I believe Seiko developed "Kinetic" and Citizen developed the solar powered "Eco", but, alas, as great looking as some of the models are, they are simply quartz with a rechargeable power cell rather than a disposable battery....at times, my weakness for "all things mechanical" overwhelms me! It's a personal choice that I struggle with daily! |

While I don't have one (yet), I am interested in the technology, and that is a sweet looking diver! I have a few Eco Drives and a solar Casio and like any watch that doesn't need a battery change. My Zippo chronograph battery just died and it is a @$% to get that caseback off. I have heard that early Kinetics had capacitor troubles that have been solved now. One of these days... I would go for it! Cheers, Griff BTW, what is the extra crown at 2 o'clock for? |

It tells you how much charge your battery has.....I think my new model can be charged up to 6 months of capacity.....My old one's...16 yrs old....only go to 72 hrs.... when the pusher is depressed and the second hand goes say to the 6 on my old Seiko that indicates 72 hrs of charge.....starting from the 12 of course.... |

I like kinetic. Yes, the power reserve on that newer model should be around 6 months when fully charged. There are kinetics that can be put into a sleep mode and last 2-3 years on a full charge, then resume to the correct time when 'woken'. It's a neat hybrid of mechanical and quartz technology. And, for those that think it has no 'heart' there are (if I remember correctly) more moving parts in a kinetic than a mechanical. Something I learned from a friend: "...and when the microgenerator spins it does so at supersonic speeds when engaged by the rotor hand6.gif." That's right, the microgenerator is spinning at speeds faster than the speed of sound! That by itself is pretty cool (to me). And to post again that friends words from another forum: "Yep, its still relative motion between coils and magnets but many years and patents in the field of low power electronics went into the development of the kinetic movement, which also made the Spring Drive possible." So the research in Kinetics were what made Spring Drive possible. That's some serious engineering. Final thoughts: "Most collectors do not like quartz, because they lack "soul". Problem is, this "soul" is crafted today not by artisans, but designed on and cut by the same mass of wires and silicone found in quartz movements. That's right, Autocad and CNC." So...I like quartz. I like Kinetic. I also like automatics. I like watches period. Hi, my name's Topher...and I'm a watchaholic. Bouncy.gif |
