Howdy, Now I am on to post #2. As I mentioned in my intro I am looking for an everyday watch and a dive watch and would appreciate any input. I am actually a SCUBA instructor, but work in a different field now so dive mostly for recreation and only occasionally teach. Right now I think I am going to hold on the dedicated dive watch. I may just get a less expensive, but functional watch, maybe a G-Shock, but don’t know. I’ll figure that one out later. With respect to the everyday watch, I would like one that works everyday, but could also work for the occasional dress/suit occasion. I am considering a diver and also like Chrono’s. I want a watch with a metal or rubber band, sapphire dial window (this cuts down on scratches right?), a good degree of water resistance (for pool, beach etc) and prefer a Swiss/German movement. I have also set a rather arbitrary (in that I don’t know if it is a realistic cutoff number for watches) price limit of $500 US. Below I will list some watch brands/styles that appeal to me (irrespective of price) to give an idea of what is my style: With respect to divers I like the looks of the Debaufre’s and Boschetts (not sure if I like the Cyclops windows, but maybe that is being too narrow minded) and really like the Accutron VX-200. I also like the looks of watches such as the Doxa, Enzo, and Vixa. I also like the looks of the exhibition case backs, but am not dead set on them. For Chrono’s I love the look of the Ball Hydrocarbon (again, just to give an idea of the style I like) and Accutron Chrono’s. I also like the looks of other watches such as the Debaufre tritons, non chrono Balls, Sinn, and Stowa. So basically I am a bit all over the place. Help! Also, if I do go grey market, are there some better dealers out there to work with? I Imagine there are, perhaps once I decide on a watch and that is the way to go I can get some input on that as well. Cheers, David

Well, since I have some affiliation with Debaufre I will try not to be too biased ;) You have certainly hit on some great brands and styles - As I mentioned above, I am, of course, going to heartily recommend the Debaufres you mentioned! But to be fair, given the roster you listed, you can't really go wrong with any of them. While $500 is certainly a fair budget for an excellent watch, some of the brands you mentioned are outside of that range... The Accutron diver and chrono, while I have not owned either, certainly look great and come well recommended from a number of WIS I know; they seem to be available at good prices recently too! I would add Hamilton and Zodiac as two brands that come to mind that offer a variety of good quality styles in a range of prices, paritcularly if you are willing to go used or grey market. I know you mentioned German and Swiss specifically, but if you are open to Japanese as well, I would not overlook both Seiko and Citizen..common brands without the panache of some of the other lesser known ones, but they are hard to beat for quality and value, particularly in the $200-$300, IMO (I am talking street prices, not retail tag prices!) And as far as a beater goes for your diving, etc I would agree 100% on the Gshock as the best value in something indestructable... I know others will have more and better thoughts - so keep em coming! Either way, have fun, the hunt is sometimes the best part!

The bases look to be well covered there. So to the wife. :D Dose she like purses, shoes, jewery, makeup and all those finer lady things? :) Men need a shopping vise too and it is also a hobby and can be seen as a investment too, so on and so forth. ;)

The Debaufre is an excellent line of watches and the Ocean1 would probably be a good multipurpose watch as Rolex has made the standard "SUB" acceptable as a dress watch also. In the same vein, I would also highly recommend the Boschett Reef Ranger in a blue or black (for multi-purpose) or in yellow or orange as a totally casual watch. I have the VX-200 in both the coke chrono and blue 3-hand. Nice, well made time pieces, well made...and a little "blingy"...I'm thinking bead-blast for at least one. I also have the VIXA Type 20, DD2020 chrono which is a great watch and can be picked up on the pre-owned market at a good price. And again, as watchstuff said, don't overlook Seiko or Orient for great time pieces at reasonable price.

Thanks for the responses everyone! As for the Japanese watches Ken and Watchstuff, what would you suggest? I was a bit hesistant to ask about Japanese watches because I am a bit miffed at Citizen right now. My 70 dollar quartz watch died right outside of warranty as did a coworkers Eco Drive. I realize there is nothing scientific about two random watches dying, but it left a bad taste in my mouth nevertheless. Anyways, in fairness I should be open to Japanese watches (maybe even including citizen) as well. Skip, luckily my wife is ok with the purchase, because I would not be able to make the jewelry/purse/shoe argument as she is not much into those things... GO SPAIN! Also check out Tissot - their Seastar 1000 has some things in common with the Accutron (similar bezel, at least IMO) and is always well regarded, and well within your price range. They make a nice variety of mechanical and quartz that are excellent quality and at very good price points...(there is a quartz chrono version of the Seastar that is very cool as well as Nascar themed quartz chronos and pretty much every other kind of style!). For me, one way to get a quick look at samples of a brand is to do a search for the brand name on Amazon or another large online seller (I would not use ebay for this kind of research...) you can often get a good rundown of the models that way all in one place...have fun!
