hey i found these two babys while searching for a new watch, which do you prefer? The ball has gas light tubes 56 of em in fact and the Fortis has the luminus face. They are both about the same price with the ball being less than 100 more. Either one would be a grail so i need some opinions on these.

I like the Ball. The dial just seems to call me and the tubes are just a big bonus. Just my opinion.

Yea the Ball's prices have gone way up. You want to watch all the sales forums for a good deal. Now and then you will even see a insane good deal.

Ball, for the tubes.  I have a Luminox F-16 and tubes are great to have at night.

I'm a member of several WIS sites, and Fortis does not appear to have very good service after the sale.  I've read enough horror stories from Fortis owners to make me avoid the brand.

Never cared for this variant of the Ball. I am much more comfortable with something a little more staid like the Fireman which I also own. I do not care for the split day/date and the dial arrangement doesn't speak to me.:X

As for the Fortis... why hell yeah!! Great watch in all respects. Highly legible day or night. Solid as a rock and darn good lookin' I'm not just a fan... I'm an owner!

How about some specifics? And always consider the source...;)

having owned both I have never heard a complaint of Fortis CShand6.gif.... but have heard more than a few against Ball...especially if you are a second owner or bought it grey market as they will not work on it :(

I like the Fortis, I have just a plain old fleiger and love it.  Service is through Providence Watch Hospital which although inconvenient was pretty good when I needed a repair done. I think turn around was under a month.

The stories were in the Fortis Forum on "another WIS site." :)  One was about the replacement of a B-42 screw-down crown with a push-pull crown, and another was about QC issues with a luminous marker.  A third story, on a different site, was about a watchmaker who couldn't get Fortis to sell him a part.  This watchmaker had purchased parts from Fortis before, then he hit a brick wall.  There were other stories, but those are the first few I remember.

Fortis makes some beautiful timepieces, I just want to be very careful with my limited WIS dollars, as their prices are on the high end of my WIS budget.

Between those two particular pieces, I like the looks of the Fortis.  Just looks cleaner to me.

I would vote for the Ball as I have been wanting one ever since I saw them.  Just got to have the tubes.  But, in the long run only you can decide which one speaks to you the most.  ThumbsUp02.gif

The more recent Fortis models have a push pull crown system rather than a screwdown. WR is unaffected and remains 200m with the push/pull crown. One might actually look at that as an upgrade from a system used on an older watch to the current crown system.

There is a WIS who purchased a MarineMaster lume dial from eBay (not me), had an issue and then had Fortis work on the watch under warranty. That's fairly generous as well.

I have had nothing but flawless operation from both my Fortis and my Ball watches.

Regardless, I can surely appreciate wanting to get the best value for your WIS dollar. That's just smart.:D Based on my experience with both these brands, I would say both offer a high level of value for the money.

It's hard to say...

These are totally different models. Both look really nice. The Fortis has a classic diver design,  while the Ball is more original.

Ask yourself what you're really looking for... If it's an everyday watch, I think the Fortis would be more adequate. But if you want to show off a little bit, go for the Ball!

In doubt, I always pick the more original design. I like watches with a strong personality. Watches that you need to get used to...

In any case, you can't go wrong. These are fine timepieces hand6.gif

Ball for sure. I've wanted one for as long as I've become obsessed with watches... Still don't own one though. Thus I need to live vicariously through others who are able to get their hands on one.

Enjoy whichever you decide on

Fortis for me, I have one of the Aviator series and it is as solid as the day I got it 10 or so years ago.  The Spacematic series is also a great line, I have never taken one of the divers apart.

All of the top tear watch companies are trying to limit the impact the gray market to there bottom line it is not specific to one brand.  I personally and none of the people I know have had a problem with there customer service and that is allot of Fortis watches.
