Every Collection should have a Longines: Unfortunately, I couldn't find a Classic Longines watch under $200 Canadian. By substituting it with a Wittnauer of the 1950's, heck not only did I save some serious money but also I get a watch with a Longines movement. Even though the movements says: Wittnauer 17 Jewels made by the Wittnauer Watch Co. It was owned and designed by the Longines Watch Co. in St. Imier,Switzerland. Hence the inscription on the back of a Longines Watch, there you'll find... Longines-Wittnauer Watch Co. Brief History: In 1872 a 16 year old named Albert Wittnauer arrives in New York from Switzerland. Already a watchmaker, the young Wittnauer was set to work for his brother-in-law named J. Eugene Robert, who was an importer of fine watches. (For more info. google Albert Wittnauer). About my Watch: My latest addition to my watch box is a Wittnauer Revue Rectangle Case. There is a sub-second at the six o'clock position with a precise winding crown that feels as though it has been recently cleaned. The silver dial has a bit of patina at the 11 o'clock position, however far too beautiful to get a refinish. I'm not a big fan of refinished dials,it's got to be original or else the watch doesn't look right. Two reasons, the first being is that poorly refinished dials depreciate the value of a watch. The second reason if the script on the dial doesn't match the original, the watch looks faked. It's worse on watches with applied indices were the spacing are incorrect. Besides,Jay Leno never buys a restored car. He prefers all original classic automobiles from every period. (According to Jay Leno's Garage). I'm the same way with my watches...it gives them character, a personality that separates one watch from the other. I often think of my watches as a friend, they were with me during good times (sorry for the pun) and bad. Each has provided me with accurate time keeping and in return I send them to a watchmaker to make sure my "friends" get the care and attention that they deserve. Perhaps that's why I'm still single...that's another story. Since I've already own a Wittnauer 10 k Gold Filled Round Case with center second hand. Oh,by the way it needs the correct crown. I thought, "What the hey. Just go for the Rectangle Case with the sub-second." With the two of them side-by-side, my vintage and classic watch collection is complete. The current brown leather strap,on the Wittnauer Rectangle would have to wait til Monday to receive its Alligator Strap at work. Where are the Pics? I knew most of you would be asking that question and my response is. Be Patient. I'll post some shots of my newly arrived Wittnauer once I get a hold of digital multi-tasker. Who owns Wittenauer: The Citizen Group. No, it's not a bank but a brand of watches that are owned by the Citizen Watch Co. Names like: Accutron,Bulova,Campanola,Q&Q,Caravelle and Frank Lloyd Wright. With Licensing Agreement with Harley Davidson to produce the Harley Davidson line of watches. Cheers, Simon
