Interesting info Johnny. Never realized service could end up to be a loss for the provider. I've got a number of watches that should hit the service cycle right about the same time...mistake.gif

I think everyone buying these watches knows about the servicing end just don't care to consider that factor until it's time is due. I don't beleive watch companies do this at no profit as stated by Swatch/Longines. Longines may only do it for a pittance because they are struggling to become their former selves and have to prove their worth.

On the other hand I didn't think Villemont was around long enough to have enough repairs to put them under.

That's what I say about my boss's R---x.  He took it in for service.  The bracelet was sloppy, the crystal was like looking through privacy glass, and the time was slowing down.

It had to be sent to the factory for "refurbishing".

Four weeks and $400 dollars later he got it back, new crystal, new Jubilee style bracelet, and the movement was cleaned, adjusted, and lubed.  He was happy...for about a week, when the crystal clouded up with condensation. An issue he didn't have before sending it to the factory.

It has not come back yet, but at least they are making good on it, and there will be NC for the second trip overseas.

He's wearing a $70 dollar Swatch in  the meantime.

Speaking of servicing -- I'm relatively new to mech. watches (got my first about a year ago) -- where do you guys to go get them serviced?  Is it normal practice to ship them to a manufacturer, or is it OK for a local watch repair shop to have at it?  Do you do this every 5 years or whatever, or do you only take them in when they start slowing down?  Is it bad to wait for a problem instead of doing it at regular intervals regardless of performance?  Are problems like the crystal on the Rolex above things that happen a lot?

Similar story with mine. I wore it in a hot tub on vacation and water somehow got in it. Buggered up the movement and dial. After 6 weeks and my wallet 1K lighter, I got it back. Basically everything except the case and bracelet was replaced. Although its been fine ever since but I don't even wear it that often.

What kinda burns me up is that just the case and bracelet are valued at 3K according to Rolex and its only SS!

Don't get me wrong though, I still like the watch.

Personally I don't think some buyers of expensive mechanical watches are aware of the service required and are not told about it when purchasing.

I thought you weren't supposed to subject the watches to hot water. It affects the seals and allows in water?

While a hot tub is a bit warm, at 102-104 degrees fahrenheit, its hardly hot water. I've worn many watches in the Ocean to the hot tub and my Rolex was the only watch I ever had an issue with. Bad luck I guess.

You are supposed to keep them out of the shower, jacuzzi and sauna as those temperatures will affect the seals and gaskets due to the high temp.

That is a good question. WHO makes an automatic watch that can handle it all.

So, what about the folks who live hot climates? Are we supposed to keep our watches in a cooler during the summer? cool10.gif

And a watch sitting on the deck of a boat in the sun where surface temps can exceed 115F and then plunged into abyss of 65F water is a shock as well but my other water resistant watches have taken that abuse, like they are designed to. It was only the Rolex that failed.

I don't make it a habit of wearing a watch in a hot tub but water that is only in some cases 20 degrees warmer than Ocean water shouldn't have adverse effects, at least not at a price point of a product that is supposed to be one of the best. Thats my opinion. hand6.gif

Geez,  I wore my sub in the hot tub last week for the first time.  Thankfully no problems to report.  Interesting considering all the talk about the new ceramic bezel insert on some Rolex models on another forum.  Insert and bezel run over $1,000 to replace.
