Hello everybody,
I have a stupid question, but I ask it anyway goofy

I have 2 watches in mind, that I really like, the Patek Aquanaut 5167/1a with the steel bracelet and the Rolex GMT Master II Ceramic! I know, these are very diferent watches and cannot be compared but I still like them!
Now I'm very unsure which one I should go for! The Rolex is not even half the price and probably better for everyday stuff! The Patek, I just like smile8.gifhearteyes.gif

For the Patek I have to save money a lot longer, so money is also an important factor!watch2.gif

Is Patek worth the price? (I could buy 2.5 Rolexes with that money)
Is Patek so much better than Rolex?

It would be nice to get some input from you guys! Bouncy.gif

History says both brands are at the top of the food chain.

Its a personal choice,

Both are Nice, currently both are holding value.
If you have the funds, buy the Patek if status is what your after.

I personally find the Patek Aquanaut to be an unappealing watch, visually, so for me this would be no contest for the Rolex.  Is the Patek 2.5 times "better" than the Rolex?  No.  Will it hold its value?  Probably.  Is it a more exclusive watch?  Definitely.

Is a Rolex 3X as good as ????....the answer is usually NO!  But the answer to your question is that if you are buying it for YOU, get whatever you want...if you are buying for OTHERS, get the Rolex.

I happen to be a fan of the Rolex GMT Master II and have one.  I don't particularly like the style of the Patek Aquanaut 5167/1A.  Also, (and this info was hard to find), it is a 40mm case...a little on the small side (these days) but perfectly appropriate for a dress watch.

I think the Rolex is a little more functional and would get more wear (unless you are afraid of dinging it)...so as a personal choice, I would go for the GMT.

Although the Patek is not for everyone for me from all angles the Patek would be my chioce if it were between a Rollie and the Aquanaut...style,function,propietary movement and long term growth value....a Patek rarely looses it's value if ever and in most all cases goes up invalue....it would be a treasured timepiece in my collection hand6.gifhand6.gif

IMO, if it was between the Patek and the Rolex, I would go with the Rolex....not a big fan of the Aquanaut, nothing special about it.

But that said, if you are not hard set on getting one of these two there are a lot of other watches out there that are less expensive than the Rolex and IMHO watches that I would rather own then the Rolex.....Oris, Alpina, Kobold, just to name a few.

For what you would spend on the Rolex you could get a couple other watches and have some diversity.

The GMT II for me-I would go Pre-Owned with all Box and Paperwork from a Reputable  Source (approx - 30% cheaper than purchasing New.  These will undoubtably hold their Value and likely increase above what you would pay for  a pre-owned as the trend is telling us. So rather than take the loss of deprciation from new- Purchase pre-owned and you will no doubt see a profit if ever sold sometime in the future!

Ps: Besides, The GMT II KICKS ASS Hands down to this particular Patek anyway!!!

I doubt I'll ever go for either of those top tier watches but would be a happy camper with either. But for value I concur with Oscar there. ;)

IMO it doesn't matter which is the better watch or if one is worth more than the other. The only person you have to please with your purchase is you!;) I know its tough but you have to decide which of these two really trips your trigger. And that's no easy decision as they are both excellent watches imho.

Personally I would go for the Rolex but perhaps that is because I have a GMT Master II and find it to be superb. The Patek is appealing too, but I personally am more drawn to the Rolex.

Whichever you decide on you will have a beautiful timepiece you will be able to treasure for many years.

That wasn't much help was it?toon1.gif

They're both very nice watches. They both will hold their value and have an air of exsclusivity about them. One more so than the other, but it's opposite is more well known outside the WIS community. I think it comes down to personal preference as previously stated. I like both, but would probably go for the Rolex unless a screaming good deal could be found on the Patek.

I own 2 Rolex watches and 0 patek watches so, I would get the Patek... But, that is me.  While I love Rolex, Patek has the reputation of being the finest watch manufacturer in the world. That said and assuming the price point is similar, which do you like better and which would get the most wrist time?  Unlike many collectors, most of us here wear our collection, I know I do so for me collecting gives me the pleasure of wearing fun, interesting and sometimes valuable time pieces. If you intend to wear the watch, get what you like best. If it is for investment, perhaps the Patek will end up the most valuable down the road since most Rolex products tend to hold their value, not increase in value.

guys, thank you very much! I'm new here and I just have to say: this is a great forum! thankyou.gif

Of course, I'm still not sure, which one to get! In one moment it is the Patek in the next it is the Rolex!
Last friday I went to a watch store and tried them both on! Both really nice watches, for me grail watches (the Patek probably more than the Rolex, because it is Patek)! Right now it is a bit more the Patek, but this could change very fast!
So keep posting and thanks again!

I would purchase the Patek.  I was about to purchase a Rolex Sea Dweller DeepSea and passed on it 2 weeks ago and purchased another brand.

After thinking on it some both of those are smaller than I care for really. I think I'd have to go for the Deapsea or Yacht Master if I could choose from within the brands in oh say sub $25K

I like that new Sea Dweller Deapsea. I downloaded the screensaver from Rolex.com a while back and run it all the time, it is cool, it keeps time and date, sweep second, 3D angle of the watch (not straight on shot)
... just went to the site and found they have the screen savers for most of the popular models now including the GMT... cool! I am going to get a GMT for free now.

Funny I have the same screen saver here at work with the Seadweller on it.

Grab an older seadweller for half the price- and you will be just as happy.
