I've given myself a year to save up to something special for my 30th next year and I thought I could use a few opinions and justifications since I'm such a fickle sorta guy.

These particular pieces have always struck my fancy, and I'd like to know your thoughts on them too.

Disclaimer: none of these photos are mine.  I found them off the web and are purely for my own reference.  If you are the owner of any of these images and would like them deleted please PM me and I will do so immediately.

And the bucket list goes:

RGM Model 250P.  I really like this most unique take on the Fleiger, especially the blued dial screws and the tiered dial construction.  Also being an RGM, I'd be hard pressed to see someone else wearing one in Singapore.

Rolex Explorer I.  I've wanted one every since I was 18, when dad brought me to the AD to pick up his GMT II.  It's an iconic, instantly recognisable piece that will never grow old in my eyes.  Inifinitely versatile to go with any attire.  Problems?  Everybody and the local pawn-shop has one, not to mention the fakes mistake.gif.

GO Senator Navigator
To me, the final word in pilot watches and the watch of choice for someone discreet yet informed.  Best part is, being a Glashutte, the nicest bits are the bits you can't see.

Tag Heuer Monaco Reissue.  I'm not a big Tag Heuer fan, but I'm a big Steve McQueen fan, and this watch will always bring back memories of that famous scene in the Le Mans movie.  This is another timeless design, imo.

Sinn 203 ST.  The essential Sinn chronograph.  Rugged, dependable, legible and a no-nonsense companion.

Breitling SuperOcean Heritage 38.  Finally a simple, solid dive watch that fits on my skinny 6.75" wrist without looking like a wrist-weight.  I also really like that mesh bracelet.

But most of all, I'd like to know what you guys think, and if there are any owners here willing to chip in with their thoughts?

Thanks everyone.
Jonathan

Tough choices, Jonathanface4.gif. Your choice should suit your lifestyle now and what you see it to be over the next 5 to 7 years. If you work indoors in an office like a card-bearing desk diver (like me), the choice might be different than if you worked outdoors in the street.....say as a civil works surveyor. But just my 2 cents:

For warm and humid Singapore, maybe I'd think twice about the leather strapped choices although among them, I'd go Tag. I'm not a TAG guy myself, never was and never will, but that rare re-issue is something notable to own. If you decide to go Tag and leather, the solution is simple: frequent strap changes.

It's now a toss-up between the timeless and decades-proven Explorer 1 and that very eye-catching Breitling with such a clean and refined dial plus a mesh bracelet as a bonus.

The recommendation: the Breitling

2 cents done.;)

Thanks BRP.  I work in advertising, so it's more about looks and what it says about you.  That being said, there are plenty of people in the industry who will blindly buy whatever the media throws at them (and there's a lot of uppity lifestyle media here in S'pore.) and after all, I want a watch that will remind me of what I was like at 30 when I'm...I don't know...50 or something.

I know they're great watches, but current top of my "no" list is the VW Golf GTI / Panerai Luminor Base owner.  The advertising guys here like to go with the B&R 01 or 03 models too, for some reason.

Designers are a little cooler!  I was in a meeting a few weeks ago and one of the Jesper Morrison Rado's and another Meistersinger Uno were present.  Tres sharp.

I appreciate your thoughts.

The GO. It's classic and it's cool. I'm in advertising too, it if means anything (and it probably doesn't).

Hey, cool, I was thinking exactly the same, getting a nice watch for my 30th next year. Although I'm more into divers, so it's something like Sinn U1 or Doxa for me.

I'd take the Breitling of course, I love the looks and it does look gorgeous on that mesh bracelet.

What a tough choice to make from these fine offerings. Questions really is which speaks to you most at your milestone birthday of 30?

That being said my first choice(s) would be either the GO or RGM. Classic, understated and most certainly fine timepieces. If you are really looking to make a statement though, I would think the McQueen would do that nicely. I' with you, classic design and invokes great memories f the man in the Porsche.

Whatever you choose it sure looks as though you will have one heck of an heirloom watch which you might look back on at 50 and wonder what you were thinking and why you listened to those crazy guys at 3T.toon1.gif

I really like the Tag Monaco. Probably the only Tag I would own.

You obviously cannot go wrong with the Rolex either. Classic looks no matter the occasion or dress.

Don't know what it's like in NC but Singaporean advertising / marketing types are even bigger trendwhores than the people we sell our hyperbole to!  My best mate has the same opinion as you, but there are only two watches he would ever buy, the GO PanoNavi and the Chopard LUC Sport.

Seagal:
I hear ya.  The thing I like most about Doxa is the case shape, though they never featured so strongly in my "must have" list.

Paxman:
I'm sure I will rue the day I took heed to the advice of those more manic than I.

Danny:
To be honest, the Exp I is probably *the* safest choice out there, but man it's a helluva choice.

Thanks for your thoughts guys.  Well, it's a year to go still, but I reckon if I start saving the dosh we'll all be a little more feverish trying to decide in 2010.  Great thing about living in Singapore is the choice and the low import duties for those you can't find here.

Well I already have a SOH46 in blue :) So I'd likely go for the GO or the RGM.

Oh I almost got the brown / maroon one when they first launched but the markup was so darn hefty I had to pass.  Bought a Kampf from Anders and a new notebook instead.

The blue one has a very nice dial.  I have a Chronomat with the same dial colour.

I'm a big fan of the Explorer I ....size does not matter to me on this particular watch ....it is a classic and the true Bond watch which he wore in the books and what Ian Fleming wore while writing them hand6.gif

You are going to love that watch. Even though I don't wear it daily it is one I wond up the most often with my hand crankers along with my DeBaufre' Csar and JOA Rad. They get wound every 2 or 3 days. Love those and my Kampy ;)

Look forward to your pic. Understand the Notebook too need one myself soon. :)

I think it goes quite well with its preppier younger brother that I picked up early this year?

I wore it every day till I got the Hamilton, and the buckle's got its fair share of swirlies mistake.gif.

I realised something though.  I'm a southpaw but I wear the watch on my left hand.  Now I know why I get desk-diver swirls!  Never occured to me, strangely.

Wow, tough choices!
Being a resident of Pennsylvania, my first inclination is to the RGM, however I don't think you can beat the timelessness of the Rolex Explorer.  When I do finally buy a Rolex, it will be a tossup between it and a Sub/Seadweller.  As a racing fan, I love the Monaco but it would be one of those watches for me that would be worn very occasionally, I think you would want to wear your new watch more often!

Cheers,
Griff

RGM is the most outstanding, classic design of what you've shown, and would be a watch that you could wear for a lifetime.  Rolex datejust is nothing to get excited about... Submariner though is a different story.  Steve McQueen watch doesn't look very durable, and not something I would dive with... but then it doesn't seem you are diving, except the SINN.  If you like the look of the Breitling (I don't care for the model shown / mesh not working with dial), then you should look at the wonderful MKII Stingray which you can custom configure.  Breitling Steelfish... well, that's another story, and IMO a better choice.

Simple...chuck all these and get a ..............

Seadweller!!

Always a classic and rare enough to feel truly special when on your wrist.

Love the McQueen, and I would to love to have one.....hmmm just watched Lemans Sunday night......

Michael, I want you to drive flat out. I want Porsche to win Le Mans.

A lot of people go through life doing things badly. Racing’s important to men who do it well. When you’re racing, it... it’s life. Anything that happens before or after... is just waiting.

Hello JKang,  I'm probably the least qualified to give you advice because I don't own any of those fine timepieces.  Well here are my 2cents worth; try them all on and get the one that screams I can't live without this watch!  Good luck and please let us know which one you choose and enjoy the year long process of picking the best watch for you, cheers.  smile8.gif

Well it's just my .02 but if it were me with those choices I'd go with the RGM.  Why? Well among the already obvious reasons the one that stands out for me is it's degree of exclusivity.  I would thing that in a room of "trendwhores" it would put me on a whole other plane.  It'll go lug to lug with all the other watches in the room but try and find another one in the whole city!

Second choice would be the TAG.  Regadless whether your care for TAG or not it seems to be a piece that speaks to you and about you. You're a Mcqueen fan and not only would you be looking back at 30 but possibly even further back to  your youth following racing and watching Mcqueen.  That watch I think would have a deeper connection with who you are and what made you happy.

Whatever the choice I think we'll all be at our computers on your 30th waiting to hear what new watch you're sporting woohoo.gif

These are my 2 favorites...I would love to have both of them but then again i would love to have all of themyahoo.gifI would go with the Monaco as my first choice.  It's just got that classic all around look to it.yourock.gif

Go with the one that speaks to you most when you're ready to purchase. You've got a year to decide and your inclinations may change during that time.

RGM...hands down!  Absolutely classic.  I also love the Explorer I because of its simplicity, but it is somewhat small.  Zeno makes a fantastic homage to it, but nothing comes close to the RGM!!!

I would go for the Rolex Explorer or the Breitling.  The good news is that you really can't make a bad choice.

The Rolex is a classic and functional watch that you can enjoy on every occassion.  I like the Breitling for many of the same reasons...a nice clean, but dressy diver.  I also really like the mesh bracelet.  I just put a mesh on my Omega SMP and it is a great look and great feel.

Good luck with your choice.  Follow your gut...you know what's right for you!!!

Thanks for the comments everyone.  I know it's a year away but hey you can never begin research too early, especially in a repository of academics such as yourselves.  Thanks for bearing with me.

As for the Sea Dweller, I've tried one on before.  Too big for my wrist.  The Sub is probably the chunkiest I can go, but then, even more people I know own Subs than Exp I's.

As for the RGM...yes yes I hear you all.  It's a piece that will break the neck of any WIS but mean nothing to the uninformed.

I'd agree about the Rolex - while it is iconic, it is copied so much, I am not sure that anyone would assume you had a real one. Classic though, but only having been in SE Asia a few times for business, I couldn't say what sort of reception something like that would have in an ad agency.

I want to like Tag Heuer, and the Monaco is the one I like the best of the bunch, but it just doesn't "mesh" with me. Classic, especially with one of the 'special editions,' though.

For Breitling ... I absolutely love the Superocean. I prefer the 46 myself, but my wrists are large, so if yours is smaller then, 38 would work. The mesh band is wonderful - a bit flashy AND understated. Of the ones you listed, this is what I'd try for. It looks like a Breitling, but is also classic, and a little bit unusual. I would go for the non traditional colors - like the yellow/gold/orange colored one.

I also have lust for the Omega Speedmasters - a split between functional and dress. Though not trendy by a long shot. And when I was 30 ... I am not sure I'd go for it.

You know you could also get something with a Tourbillon view. But those can get very formal very quickly.

So I take it you want to project a image of "confident, creative, but still plays on the team?"

It would be an easy one for me the Rolex Explorer 1 buy a real one and you will have it the rest of your life or until you give it to your first born. They AWAYS hold their value very well. just my nickels worth :D

I agree with Devin and the rest of the folks who chose the Rolex—not because its a worthy watch, (we all know that), but because you have yearned for it since you were 18. To get the Explorer 1 would be to achieve a 12-year-old goal. Just something to consider.

You know ... you make a good point. mistake.gif

If you are drawn to Rolex Explorer 1... you had better get that one.  Anything else will be the "not Rolex."

Good luck!

That's my plan too. He even helped me pick it out and told me he would take it when I'm 84. didn't have the heart to tell him I probably won't make it that far...toon1.gif

I've had a few Rolex...my model choice would be the GMT Master II...classic look with extra function.  It's the only one I kept and it goes well with suit or jeans!

Can't say for sure, but I suspect NCers aren't quite as trend-conscious as Singaporeans. Do you know Neil French? One of my idols. Check out his site if you haven't already.

If you don't go with the GO, I think the Sinn Chrono is a great alternative.
