Hello all. I think this is my third post. Glad to be here.

I have been wanting to buy a Tag Heuer watch for some time now. I shop at costco and have seen a Tag like the one below but with a white or blue face. I never noticed the black face.  I didn't care for the white or blue, so I never bought one. After reading on the web that they sell a black face Tag, I ran down to the local Costco and found they were out of stock of the black face, and they were not expected to get any more in. Such is life at a Costco. I asked if any of the other stores had one. I was told that in all the Costco's in the area ( it looked like 20 or so nearest to my location ) that there was ONE. It happened to be a half hour away. Since the store was scheduled to close in a half hour, I drove as fast as possible and got there right as they closed. They indeed had one left. It was a return but in new condition. I didn't' even think about if I should or should not buy the watch as I knew this was my only chance at Costco. They have a generous return policy and I knew they would take it back if there were any problems with it.

So, the watch on the left is what I got. The current Tag Heuer Formula 1 similar to the one I got is on the right.

The Costco Tag, on the left cost $449 plus tax, I can get the current Tag on the right for $547 online without tax. The net difference is only $50, however if I buy the one at Costco, if ANYTHING goes wrong with the watch for 2 years, I will be very easily satisfied with their liberal return policies.

What I don't care about in the Costco Tag is the Arabic numerals on the face, the position of the date indicator, the underscores on the numerals on the rotating bezel and the rubberized plastic edge on the left side of the case ( which the current tag may have as well )

So, if I return the watch, I don't think I will buy the new Tag as a replacement. On the other hand, at that price, with the Costco satisfaction guarantee, it is not a bad deal... but keeping this Tag will probably prevent me from someday buying the Tag Link that I do want... Crap... It seems that I should return the watch...

Any comments?

Thanks

Paul

Welcome to 3T Paul.  Here are my 2 cents worth; take the F1 back and save for the Tag Heuer Link.  If you keep the F1, you will probably always be thinking about how cool the Link is and I'm not sure you'll think about the F1 while you're wearing the Link.  It's your money and your watch so get the one that you "really" want.  hand6.gifhand6.gif

It's a done deal. Going to return the watch tomorrow. Today went to a few watch shops and looked at the new style F1. Heads and shoulders above the Costco variant. Will be heading to Costco tomorrow. Now have three watches on my wish list.
  • Tag Heuer Link Mens Watch WJ1110
  • Hamilton American Classic JazzMaster Slim  - H38615735
  • Hamilton Ventura watch #H24451731
I left model numbers in case any of my new friends here at TTT is looking to buy a gift...

Of the three, I am liking the two Hamilton watches. You really can't go wrong with Hamilton.

Seems you've already decided to return the F1. Of the choices you have listed I would go Hammy Jazzmaster. However, if the watch you REALLY desire is the Tag Link, hold on to your money and wait until you can get the Link.

Listen, I'll let you in on a little secret... you'll go nuts trying to keep up with the new watches being shown off on this and other forums. Don't feel like you need to have SOMETHING. Take a little time and go for the watch you really want. You'll be entirely more satisfied and will have mastered the art of patience which runs in the face of chronic WIS-dom.

I agree  100% with Marc (Paxman).

This forum is not about the make of watch,
that counts. It's the enjoyment and satisfaction
of being able to afford such a luxury item as the
Tag Heuer Link and the means to do so.

All of us here, have a grail or dream watch.
It takes years to achieve such a prized possession,
don't ever feel that you need an expensive watch
to be accepted as a member.

As long as you've enjoyed what you own and
willing to share your thoughts, that is what this
forum is about.

Cheers,
Simon

Thanks all for the replies and suggestions. I have no problem buying an inexpensive watch, I have bought 4 that are around but under $200, and one at $350 in the past week. For some reason when the price goes over $200 I have a mental block. At present, I still have the Tag, but only because I didn't make it to Costco today. due to a plumbing job in the kitchen - you know the type should take about an hour, spent the entire afternoon doing...

To be honest, my more immediate concern is getting a winder and case for my growing collection. I have checked out http://www.watchboxco.com online and find that they have a storefront here in Los Angeles. Maybe tomorrow I will take a drive up there and see what the boxes look like in person. I hate to buy something like that online and find I hate the box. Given return policies and shipping costs it's almost not worth returning if the item isn't so great.

Thanks again for the kind welcome.

Paul, just to add a little bit: Stormin, Paxman and Simon are totally right. Get the watch you like and you'll never regret it. If you like the Tag Link go ahead and save up for it.

Owning a watch is all about personal gratification, without breaking the bank, of course. I echo Paxman and Oscar on their "hint" about the Hamilton. So if you still need some more time to get the Link, check out the reviews and history of Hamilton, while you save up for it. Meantime, planned viewing of the 2 watches at the store's counters will help you much more.

In the end, get what you want....then save up for the next onessubtlelaugh.gifsubtlelaugh.gifsubtlelaugh.gif
