I love the look, feel, and crown of the IWC Big Pilots ... but just can't justify $10k for a watch. Does anyone know of a similar looking pilot's watch? http://www.gemnation.com/watches/IWC-Pilot-Big-Pilots-Watch-IW500401-2724.html ![]() |

Debaufre or Steinhart Nav-B. I think there is a 48mm version that may float your boat. I have the 44mm version and love it. John |

About the Watch: This is the Flagship watch in IWC's line. The IWC Big Pilot case is made from 18ct White Gold and is also available in Stainless Steel. Both watches are available only with alligator strap and that the inner case of both these watches are lined with soft iron for protection against magnetic fields The White Gold version weighs 185 g, whereas the Stainless Steel version weighs 147 g. Both sides of each of these watches have a convex anti-reflective coated sapphire crystal. The crystal themselves are protected against drop in air pressure. The case diameter measures: 46.2 mm The case height measures: 15 mm Water Resistant: 6 BAR (60 Meters) About the Movement: The Caliber 51111 is a 42 jewel movement rated at 26,100 v/ph at 3 hertz with a 7 day (168 hours) Power Reserve. This movement is manufactured by IWC which made it's debut in 2002. It is the largest automatic movement ever created in the world. The power reserve can generate up to 8.2 days but only runs for 7 days before an ingenious little mechanism automatically stops it. This eliminates the fall-off in torque that occurs as the mainspring winds down, which could lead to loss of amplitude in the balance and unacceptable inaccuracies in the rate. I agree the DeBaufre would have been a much better choice imhohand6.gif |

oagaspar wrote: I agree the DeBaufre would have been a much better choice imhohand6.gif I concur that the DeBaufre is indeed a closer match ... however I did leave out a few key points: 1. While I like the crown on the IWC (and the closer match on the DeBaufre than the CWard), it is just too big for my taste. I've seen the IWC worn by someone at the poker table and it is indeed striking, but the crown almost drowns the rest of the watch. 2. I prefer a white face to a black face. 3. I think the markings on the face of the CWard are much more aesthetically pleasing than the Streinhart or the DeBaufre. 4. For only $100 more than the price of the DeBaufre (assuming I can even find one), I'm getting both the CWard and the Praesto Modern Fliegeruhr - Aviator. Comments and critiques requested ... lay it on me! ![]() |

Dbruins, check out the Steinhart Nav B. I don't think Debaufre' carries the Nav-Bs anymore. Steinhart has "gold plated" hands and rotor and really looks nice. You can also check out Azimuth as well as Stowa and Archimede. I think the first Pilots that were issued had black dials thus the homages and re-issues came out in black. It takes a little bit of time to get used to the Big Pilots on your wrist (about 3 to 5 seconds ![]() Hope this helps. |

But if it's heritage of the model, then perhaps that wins out! I have a 51mm Nixon and it took some getting used to ... now it's fun to wear ... and gives a different excuse as to why my left arm is bigger than the right ... face4.gif I didn't care much for the Stowa or Archimede style. The Azimuth's are sick ... but I'd rather buy 5 $500 watches than one $$$ one ... know what I mean? This is sick though!!! ![]() YUMMY YUMMY! |
