I have a friend looking to pick up an "heirloom quality" pocket watch. I'm not even sure where to go with this... Budget is right around $500. Any suggestions 3T? TIA.ThumbsUp02.gif

I think Simon collects pocketwatches and he'd know. There are some gold-filled Waltham vintage watches that can he had at that price point. Paging Simon.....

Depends what he means by "heirloom quality"...if he wants something really old, like civil war era you can get a lot of watch for $500, something like a really nice coin silver case key wind.  If he wants something a little more contemporary I would suggest an American RR grade watch...you can get a really nice Hamilton 992B for that much money and maybe less....depending on the case you can also get a Bunn 60 hour for that price.

I would suggest looking on eBay...there are a lot of good, and honest pocket watch sellers, you know the drill there...soos check if they list a NAWCC membership number listed

If he is looking for "new" I would suggest Tissot. I believe they are one of the few left making new pocket watches in that price range.

Hi Mark. I am 12 hours ahead of New York where I am right now.

For NZ, yes, we are about 15/16 hours ahead of New York. That makes us slightly ahead of IanM's home zone.happy guy.gif

Thanks for the input guys. I've put my friend on to the Tissot which actually looks pretty nice. This will be a wedding gift for her soon to be husband. I, of course suggested a wrist watch but she already got him the watch of his dreams for their engagement. A Movado... go figure.mistake.gif

A Movado as a dream watch?

There is only one thing to do, that is to give him a two-year
subscription to Watch Time Magazine...subtlelaugh.gif

Cheers,
Simon

If they are still looking for pocketwatches, Zeetan just put out a couple of really nice pieces in his newsletter.

Molina pocket watches are good, do not under rate them.
They can be obtained very cheap but you can by vintages from the 60's etc so they last.
My Dad has a few and also a few RAKETA pocket watches, he loves them and will hand them down to me.
They have hand painted covers of scenic woodland and other things. Worth a look.

I know the question is old but I'd like to throw in my suggestion...the Orient Pocketwatch. Nice piece and it's brand new so I think it would make a perfect heirloom for the future (even has a display back and a power reserve ( which makes sense on a hand cranker)).
