Thanks, Trent. This is absolutely a great read on the brand, its ascendance to the top and the scores of distinguished owners who've tattooed the watch to their wrists. Just a point on Dr. Miller's purchase of his red Tiffany Sub in 1974 for US$445....my dad in 1956, to mark his wedding day, bought a Rolex GMT1, the pepsi, for an unbelievable price of about US$200. He's 82 now and he still remembers how much he paid for it back then. Well a year after the purchase of that pepsi, bigrustypig was born  .In stark contrast, about 2 months ago, I had my wife's 2 tone DateJust serviced for its 2nd 5 year service sked and I paid almost exactly US$200 and all she got was the servicing, a few rubber gaskets and some pieces of steel   I wonder what prices rollies will fetch in 2050??? well in 1959 my dad was a new grad naval engineer and I think his years salarywas $4500 so that Rollie was about 5 percent of his pay. Still better to get the whole watch for that price than the bag of parts |
