Warning: Not suited to be read by guys with weak stomachs Special Warning for Mark: if you do not want to ruin your weekend on your new boat STOP NOW!!! Should I trade an Omega for a reNOto, or not... Your collective opinion will be highly considered. So, I'll include a poll to make it easy. Anyway, I currently own an Omega Seamaster Professional (SMP), model number 2254.50.00. I have had it for about three years, yet I rarely wear it. Of course, I have the box and its papers, etc. As of late, I've been looking at the reNOto T-Rex Diver Limited Edition with the silvertone case and bracelet and the orange and black bezel with the Valjoux 7750 movement and it's starting to grow on me. So, I've considered trading the Omega for the reNOto, if someone would be willing to trade their reNOto. But, a good friend of mine says I'm crazy to trade in my Omega for a number of reasons. Yes, the Omega is the quintessential diver/tool watch with vast improvements over the Rolex equivalent at a fraction of the cost (the Omega runs between $2300 to about $1700, depending on the source - ie, used, AD, or grey market/non-AD). Plus, the Omega has a tremendous lume brightness that I have not seen in any other watch in its class. So, now, I'm at a cross-roads. Should I, or should I not trade it? I defer to your collective opinion. Thanks in advanced. Skelton’s advice….this guy is OD’ing on the KoolAid It will all come down to personal preference in the end because you are honestly comparing apples to oranges. One is a watch that isn't quite 42mm in size, the other is 50mm. One is slim on the wrist, the other is quite chunky. One is about 1/3 of the weight of the other. One is a 3 hand auto, the other is an auto chrono. One has a COSC Certified, nicely modified movement, the other uses a base caliber, but decorated movement. One is very mass produced, the other... only 25 exist in the world for each color for 09 and for 2010 (2 different series runs with slight variances). One has extreme applications of Superluminova and will almost always glow all night long, the other uses smaller, more shallow applications of SL and will not glow as long or as vividly. One has a "name", although as you see from retailers online selling "new" and from secondary market sales on used ones... the value doesn't hold like many would like you to believe. The other may not hold value either, but right now the few we've seen sell, have sold for nearly full price. That is NO GUARANTEE, just a simple observation. As most know, I am a huge Omega fan myself, and have owned several, including overpriced "Limited Editions" (if you call 10,007 "limited" lol), but am also a fan of reNOto. I am attempting to be unbiased, but it is difficult. I own that exact reNOto as you may know, and it is one of my favorite sport watches. No way around it... the details of the dial, the construction of the case and bracelet... all top-notch in every way. IF that watch said Omega on the dial, it would probably be about $5,000. But there you have that underlying little "ping" in the back of your mind... "the name"... to some, a brand name means the watch is worth more. The market disproves this time and time again, but we ALL (myself included) feel that pull at us when we make a buying decision. But yes, you are buying into heritage and the fact that anyone who sees it will recognize the name right away, and you'll get that respect. But then again... how many other people own that exact watch? I would guess tens of thousands. How many will own that exact reNOto? 25. Somebody’s response to Skelton Jim in your opinion , an educated,or gut feeling with all you know in this business.how do you see reNOto as a contender in the mid range market in say 30 years from now, could they become as well known and sought out as some of the other brands?.I ask this because several clients I have who have 7 and 8 figures behind them have all been really impressed with my reNOto's and two of them have already bought some from the shop.these people are beyond the name status thing and were honestly impressed with Daniel as a designer.I know you cant predict but just your gut feeling on this .thanks And Skelton’s response Honestly, it's impossible to say. In the 60's Bulova was the KING of watches, they were revered as Rolex is today. And back then, before Rolex became James Bond's choice... they were not well-known, or highly touted watches. And the Wall Street boom of the 80s solidified their place in the industry as the top brand by which all others are compared. So time, and other interesting factors can drastically change any company's direction. I would love to say that 30 years from now reNOto will be an Omega-like household name, but I don't know that this is possible. I don't buy based on brand name, or what others think. In the same week I ordered a Perrelet, an Omega (which I declined purchase on when it arrived because I changed my mind), and a reNOto. Does that mean the reNOto is equal to the Perrelet? No, it just means I liked it as much, so I bought it, and it went into the collection. Last edited on Sat Jun 26th, 2010 08:26 am by Nabco |

I hoped someone stopped that guy from swapping his Omega for a Renato, the nerve of it. Its like saying swap a Ferrari for a Ford Fiesta if you like the Ford more. Dammit sell the Ferrari and buy a Ford then go on holiday with the change, or just don't. Thanks Nick, look what you did to Mark, his hand eye coordination is now out of wack.......how can he pilot a boat now??...huh?..... huh? ROF_Dog.gif |

....and one has been around for years and earned a solid reputation being sold by AD's worldwide at an honest value and one is a "made for TV" watch and they only make 25 of each as that is all we can sell. I swear to God...this cigar grifting Corono Gordo who allegedly has the balls to steal from a charity needs to have a custom made, one-of-a-kind watch that is branded BUFFOON in large letters of the dial!
How SNBC has the balls to keep him employed is beyond me...not wonder their stock has been in the toilet since he arrived! |

If I tie a brick to my wrist and it's heavier and thicker than an Omega I guess that means it's better than Omega?...give me a F'n break. What a line of crap....I guess when NASA wants a good watch they will choose a Retardo in lieu of Omega for that long trip to Mars....TV/cars sales at it's best. I guess my big ben is better than a Retardo? ![]() Last edited on Sat Jun 26th, 2010 07:25 pm by Gregger |

Nabco wrote:This is gotta be one of the best Jimbo quotes ever... I do believe the first part of that statement is correct. Bulova was a pretty damn big name in the 40's, 50's, and 60's. I don't agree with the second part though. |

funny cuz I thought Rolex has always been revered since day one?....so maybe my vintage Bulova is worth more than a vintage Rolie?... |

Personally, I think the best advice would be for SNBC to trade their "spokesman" in for some business ethics...perhaps then, they would be able to show a profit instead of having their stock in the toilet (which, I believe) is where they got Corona Gorda!!! On second thought, I guess the toilet analogy is apropos as you need crap to sell crap to crap! |
