James Bond Rolex Ref. 6538 with Tiffany Dial: The Importance of Details in Determining Value By Meehna Goldsmith | Published:  In the horology world, details make a big difference in value, from a few thousand to hundreds of thousands or more. It comes down to four major areas of consideration we call the 4Q’s (qualities of): maker; rarity and exclusivity; condition and originality; and, provenance and freshness to market. Collectors of Rolex particularly take note of small differences. It can be anything from a patent pending engraving on the back of a Sea-Dweller’s case to a colored lacquer dial referred to as a “Stella” on a Day/Date. The Rolex Ref. 6538 big crown is a particularly coveted item for Rolex collectors on its own. Referred to as the James Bond watch, this Submariner had an important cameo in the Bond film Dr. No. A shot cuts to the watch as Agent 007 uses it to time a bomb going off. Though Bond is a fictional character, the fact that he wore the watch gives this Submariner a particular status and provenance, resulting in pricing between $17,000-25,000.  Here we have another Ref. 6538… but it has an extra characteristic that makes it rare Instead of the Rolex crown and script below 12:00 o’clock, this one is signed by Tiffany & Co. as a co-branded venture with Rolex. To have such a renowned retailers mark on the dial elevates the desirability two fold. Christie’s has one coming up for auction tomorrow, December 14, 2012, Lot 88. The guy try to push interest before the auction... Blabla. Looks much better with the Rolex's crown than with a girly name on the dial. The original Sean Connery model wins, period. |

I would not gamble that it meet the expectations on auction... Like the P.P Clapton, or other specials it can be that people don't hook on it. The problem there , is that usually Rolex sells with it's name and recognizable logo: There's nothing on this dial appealing directly to the Rolex factor. But who knows: All the bored millionaires looking for speculative markets are always showing up on Rolex auctions. |

in the past any watch bearing "Tiffany" on the dial above the 6 along with the brand name ie:Rolex,AP etc... has brought in big bucks at auction,I have yet to see a vintage Rolex of this caliber with only Tiffany on the dial,and I expect it to exceed the estimates at auction...very rare imho. |

I don't think "Tiffany" was the only reason this watch was so rare,but only having "Tiffany" on the dial without Rolex anywhere made it a very rare bird indeed....it sold for well over the predicted $40,000-$60,000 : $ 284.500,= for Tiffany Big Crown at Christie's NY |

Like I said: Bored millionaires... Seeing only the surface of things. You will not meet those guys at auctions selling a complicated G.Daniels or a P.Dufour. Those dial values will not cross economical storms: It's too shallow IMO. I'll certainly make some guys smile with my comments but remember that if nobody cares about your Rembrandt, people still kill for gold. |

I met somes in Mexico(Chiapas) still speaking Mayan and still using them counting system to drive them shops economy in fact. They just saw this day like a start of a new era but there is a long dated so called christian dooms-day profecy movement who´s just using this as a trampoline apparently... You know: The god who will punish all of us for our sins. Medias been feasting on that like crazy and of course made money on fear. |
