Monster was a general slang term that was used for big watches, back in the day when watch size was smaller.  The Black beast I do not know any thing about Seiko specific facts like that.  Hope that helped.

My take on the names is marketing. How ever it got started I don't know, but from a marketing standpoint, someone, somewhere must have realized that it was an advantage to have a catchy name for a unique watch rather than just a model number.

It is a lot easier for the American public to latch on to and remember something like the Orange Monster than the SK781. So, I'm guessing that other names such as the Beast, etc. may have been born out of the need for a catchy name more than anything else.
