and the rest in the WSS. :) Greetings fellow watch enthusiasts! Well, obviously the focal point for me and the rest of the watch industry was in Las Vegas for this past weekend's 2006 JCK Vegas tradeshow was in full swing. For subscribers not familiar with it, JCK Vegas is the largest gathering of watch and jewelry manufacturers in North America; think of it as a smaller version of the Basel Watch Fair. Anyone serious about the watch game in North America attends this thing and so the ShoppingSource team and I boarded the Screaming Baby Express to spend a few days at the show. Trends and More Trends at JCK Vegas This event is a great place to follow up on trends initiated at Basel and if there was a single trend that continues this year, it is "bling." Diamond and steel in particular and I think this is at least due in part to gold flirting with the $700.00 per ounce range, which has manufacturers wanting to continue to expand their diamond lines and placing the stones in steel rather than risk buying gold incorrectly. And of course, as if there was any doubt at this point, the larger size watches continue to establish themselves with almost all brands now exhibiting examples 40mm or greater, although I did see a bit of a developing trend to reinvigorate the more traditional ladies size watches. COLOR Color-wise, we can definitely stop wondering if safety orange is going to hit; it is now likely easier to find name-brand watches not doing something with this color in the immediate future. Safety yellow is still around, of course and doing well, with bright blue and green continuing to grow in interest. As to gold and gold layering, rose continues to dominate without a doubt, be it in dress or sport examples. One of the trends I found most interesting is the higher end and very exclusive brands exhibiting in Vegas for the first time. I saw such industry luminaries as Vincent Calabrese and Bucherer for the first time (among others), which of course is increasing evidence as to how the JCK Vegas weekend can and does influence the U.S. market for the coming season. Von Dutch is making a move from being the underground hit in Hollywood to a force in the mainstream and introduced their new bold and aggressive designs, with a new pitch man to match: former NBA star Dennis Rodman. His presence, along with several custom choppers, made this booth one of the most talked about at the show. Krieger's clear aluminum timepieces continue to spark conversation and interest among watch guys. For those not familiar with this development, yes this really is a clear metal. These watches are up 25% from their starting price in the first year of production, moving from the $8000.00 range up to the $10,000.00 range in the current market. The brand is not sitting idly by as they garner the spotlight and besides the clear aluminum pieces, introduced examples in both steel and solid 18K rose gold. Krieger is an exciting brand and one to watch. JEAN MARCEL On the local front, per our announcement on Lines of Time over the past couple of weeks, Jean Marcel did indeed issue price increases, so congratulations to the wise collectors who bought ahead of this development. Jean Marcel also unveiled several new models; all complicated wristwatches for the most part, though they also introduced a very limited production skeleton mechanical pocket watch, as well as some new diamond pieces for women that include wonderful details, including hand-guilloche mother-of-pearl dials. Lines of Time should have some of these arriving in the coming weeks, so be on the lookout for them. OCEANAUT Oceanaut, while not willing to divulge specifics, was a bit more vocal in hinting at possible price increases, most likely to hit over the summer. These increases are due to some recent high-profile alliances they have created with "American Idol," the Academy of Country Music (ACM) and "Rock Star." In its association with the television show American Idol, the Oceanaut Ritz chronograph model can be seen on host Ryan Seacrest's wrist, as well as one of the past contestants, Ace Young. Take a look: ![]() AI host Ryan Seacrest and contestant Ace Young sport the Oceanaut Ritz model. Oceanaut's increased presence at the JCK Vegas show versus last year was quite different, with this year showing heavy traffic at their much larger booth. Going forward, Oceanaut's brick and mortar presence will expand significantly this year, which is further proof that this brand's market driven value and presence continues to grow. Oceanaut unveiled several new models, including some beautiful complicated pieces (Cortez Series) based on the Valjoux 7751 movement, as well as a power reserve piece (ETA 6498), the Cordova Special Edition, which will be produced in very limited numbers. Their established pieces with the Valjoux 7750 will be continued and you'll see a new Carrero series on a strap, which should be a hit. Additionally, I also think they will do very well with the new diamond Pacha series in both full-size and petite versions. I knew that Oceanaut had a serious following, but I had no idea as to how strong their allegiance was with women. That is until I observed first-hand Oceanaut's President, Gabriel Ibarra and his posse literally being swarmed by admiring female fans at a watch gathering held at Caesar's Palace. (By the way: if either Jasmine and/or Tiffany are a subscriber of this newsletter, Fred wants you to call!). STÜHRLING Stührling is rolling out several new models, ranging from dressy complications to a high-end looking (but affordable) military design. Several new cases appear to be in the offing as well, ranging from oversize to rectangle and even square, in addition to more traditional. George J. Von Burg (yes, "THE" Von Burg), who has served for some years now as head of Stührling's European operations, was there for the occasion and it was good to spend some time with him again. NAKEDWATCH In industry news not necessarily related to JCK Vegas, NakedWatch was just named "one of the best bargains in the industry" by HR magazine. We've been saying that for the better part of a year, but it is always nice to have a high-profile industry source validate one's opinion.Last edited on Thu Jun 15th, 2006 11:18 pm by tny795 |
