Seiko "5" series (the 5 is proposed to reflect 5 essential features of the watch namely shockproof, waterproof, automatic, with day and date display)

OK. Can someone explain what makes a watch "shockproof." Is it the retainer ring? Are there little shock absorbers inside the watch? :D:D:D

I don't think Seiko uses incabloc, but it's a similar idea to:

INCABLOC
A patented shock absorbing device which permits the end stone of the balance to give when the watch is subjected to an impact or jar. First used in 1933.

(That's from http://www.perfecttiming.ca/glossary.html)

Look up the Inca a.k.a. shock jewel.  A thin brass spring above the cap jewel that acts as a shock absorber for the pivot.

2 popular types of shock protection - Inca and KIF. KIF is more popular nowadays. As Eric mentioned, it goes over the cap jewel on the balance staff.

Before the idea of shock protection, if you dropped a watch, the balance staff couldn't absorb the impact.

p = mv = F*delta(T) ; its a bitch.

Here is a website for those of you who want to see what the shock protection looks like.

http://www.incabloc.ch/incabloc_en.html

kif seems to have been reborn as Novodiac you can see both versions there at the site .. kif aka Novodiac is cheaper to manufacture (supposedly)and seems to be standard on base offerings from ETA now.
