I've been dusting off the vintage equipment here the last couple of days checking to see what needs tinkering before wearing and of course I have to have a look inside!   When you loosen the set screw for the crown/stem be sure not to loosen it too far or you will separate the screw from the nut and it's game over without further tear down! loosen the screw no more than two turns!    |

Just to dispel any myths about us "mechanically inclined , self taught watch guys"... I learned the lesson about the set screw for the crown and stem while I was taking those photos. Rather than risk that movement for the sake of exploration I am going to opt to send it to an expert for an overhaul since it is the only accutron 218 I have and I would prefer that it was running rather than know how to tear it down! On the plus side I have a "vintage" accutron box set that will make an amazing combination with the watch once it's tuned up and running! Believe it or not, speaking of watch expertise.................I possess the ability to open up and disassembel any watch made!!! (Putting it back together is another thing entirely!) |
