The watch is, uh, interesting - but the concept described below, of using actual metal and coal from the Titanic wreck, is a little disturbing... imho...![]() ROMAIN JEROME PRESS RELEASE: The "Titanic-DNA"; a high-end watch integrating real steel from the Titanic The "Titanic-DNA" watch contrains authentic parts of the Titanic ocean liner drawn from the ocean floor. It brings together material and spirit. Or perhaps one should say soul. This watch is part of the new "DNA of Famous Legends" collection that Romain Jerome presents as a world premier. New materials, precious metals, complications - one finds all of these as well in the "Titanic-DNA". However, the watch’s real exclusivity is to be found in the direct relationship between a truly unique timepiece and one of the most extraordinary achievements created by man…the legendary Titanic ocean liner that disappeared in 1912. Here’s where spirit becomes material. This new concept goes far beyond the creation of a great luxury watch with a prestigious movement and noble materials; it is breathing a soul into the object. The result is astonishing. The object lives. It is a work of art. The Belle-Époque resurfaces on the wrist of a few privileged people who understood they have offered themselves much more than just a fine watch. The rusted steel is created by an extraordinary fusion carried out at the Harland&Wolff shipyards in Belfast, where the Titanic was constructed. This fusion brings together the authentic steel of the shipwreck, which was resting on the ocean floor at a depth of 3’840 meters, and that of the future Titanic II. This is how the DNA is captured; a myth is reborn. The hands are inspired by the anchor of the Titanic and turn on a dial of deep black; a colour obtained from the coal collected in the legendary shipwreck. The small second hand at 9 o’clock recalls the meters of the ship’s steam engines. Each version contains a Lajoux Perret movement and is limited to 2’012 pieces; a number referring to the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Titanic and the launch date of the Titanic II in Belfast in 2012. The "Titanic-DNA" is available in a watchcase of platinum or gold with elements of titanium, ceramic, composite materials or rusted steel made according to the process explained above. The Titanic, a masterpiece of its time. The "Titanic-DNA", a masterpiece of our time. Me, Im confused. What exactly is this statement offering? Are they saying that the watch if forged from a combination od materials found from both the original titanic site and the new Titanic II being built? Not casting any doubts on the validity of the statement, but here are a few points worth mentioning. I live and work in and around Belfast. The shipyard these days is a poor remnant of what it used to be and I am not sure they would be bothered with 'fusing together' old and new material form the Titanic. Its just not worth their while. Secondly, does anyone have an idea of what the price would be. I would assume that original metal from the titanic would be like gold dust, and rather hard to authenticate its originality. Lastly, having worked around this area for years, the number of things I have seen that are 'from' the Titanic, inspired by, replicated of, reaching out to and in memory of is just crazy. Saying all of that I think it is an outstanding piece of design. Just some of its inspiration and heritage I wonder about. There's my 2c for a Sunday morning. Damn the kids for being up early! |

It does seem a little sick or morbid to be wearing that thing everyday. It's not like the World Trade Center Coin where you collect it as a a commemorative, and then at least those monies went to a fund , right? This watch, it's not anything like that right? I just went back and took the time to read the thread. Yeah bad idea, and honestly don't like the watch. Anyways reading some of those threads was pretty funny. I especially liked how some people found the idea not offensive and a good idea, so that would mean the following would not be in bad taste to that person.... That watch compnay's next line should be called "The In Poor Taste Line" featuring: watches made from the ceramic tiles of the Shuttle, the scrap metals from Hiroshima, the scrap metals of the Hindenburg, or as one mentioned, "holding out for the "USS Arizona" watch." face4.gif |

Is it silicone or rubber? Going with the Titanic theme or Era, I guess they did have at least rubber back then, but leather would have made more sense? But yeah the strap looks ok for today. LOL :) |

its croc. hornback skin, whatever that is. it does look good, but the whole concept of making a watch from a death ship is eerie. |

A fairly large piece of the hull was raised in 1998. I don't like it, the whole idea of using metal for a wristwatch from a ship on which so many died just seems wrong. I didn't know anything about Titanic until my older son got interested in it, now I know far more than I ever thought possible. We did go to see the Titanic exhibit when it was at the Franklin Institute a few years ago and it was fascinating, but to make a piece of jewelry out of it, nope. On the other hand, Drum Workshop made drums out of 100 year old maple that was sitting on the bottom of one of the Great Lakes. Since the wood was freight that was knocked off a ship during a storm and it wasn't a great tragedy that is fair game (and some pretty awesome drums from what I understand, albeit $$$$$$$$$). Anything to make a buck...<sigh> |

I thought this one was to the point... "What's next? Watch parts from auschwitz?" and then there was... "Good to see they are Water-resistant..." |
