I'm not a huge Tag fan, but the Monaco keeps climbing my list. What thinks you of this? There's a poll above to record you feelings.

First immortalized on Steve McQueen’s wrist in the 1970 racing film, Le Mans , the original Monaco , with its big, squared-off case and truly avant-garde Chronomatic Calibre 11—the first chronograph movement with an automatic micro-rotor mechanism—is a mythical icon of modern watchmaking history.

TAG Heuer’s all-new vintage version sports a powerful design true to the revolutionary spirit of the original: black dial with orange and blue stripes, vintage “GULF” logo at 6 o’clock and matching black alligator strap with orange stitching. This stunning piece is a tribute to the Porsche-Gulf 917K racecar in the movie Le Mans .

The legendary Porsche 917-Gulf K, one of the most celebrated automobiles in motor racing, was only produced from 1969 to 1973. Equipped with a 600+ horsepower, 5-litre engine and capable of speeds up to 362 km/h , its success surpassed all expectations, winning Le Mans in 1970 and 1971 and setting a record that holds to this day: 5,335km at an average of 222 km/h . Its unique design and orange and blue colors, make this racecar an unforgettable dream machine.

To give added authenticity to the Porsche 917 Gulf driving scenes in the movie, McQueen insisted on wearing the Monaco chronograph because the just-out chronograph was considered the most authentic car-racing watch on the circuit. A sport and glamour legend was born.

The edgy new Monaco Vintage is equally authentic and iconic. Launched this year in a limited edition of 4,000 pieces, it is destined to become another cult classic that will appeal to racing purists and lovers of strong, disruptive design.

well it looks like i'm in the minority here ... i dont like the stripes down the centre of the watch!  to me, it looks a bit cheap... as far as Tag's go, if i were getting one, i'd probably go with a carerra or a autavia..

as for Tags, I also would prefer an autavia or carrera - I would like this Monaco if it didnt have the Gulf logo on it, aesthetically speaking of course...  anyone got a permanent marker?

I'll agree with some of you here: the blue and the orange make the watch appear a bit cartoonish, IMHO.  I'd pass on it.

I'd say the watch is right on the money for the period colors, style, and overall look. If I was gonna hang around with car guys a lot or was one who liked vintage cars, etc. I would see the value in this watch.
