Hello All,

This is my first post on these forums toon1.gif,  I stumbled upon this sight after looking for suggestions on a new watch.  I am officially a watch novice with little to know knowledge on the topic of watches (e.g. quality, features, technology etc). The last watch I had was a Kenneth Cole watch.  Nothing fancy, metal bracelet with a light blue face which has suddently gone AWOL.  I thought now would be a good time to replace it.

As watches can tell a lot about a person (well in my opinion)  I wanted to make an informed decision.  I do not have a large amount to spend on this purchase as I usually spend quite a bit on techical gear (computers, phones etc).  I would like to hit around the $250 range from something practical with a good reputation and still not seem like i'm digging the bottom of the barrel in regards to my selection.   I would prefer a metal bracelet and not leather (I have a casual leather one at home). Basically an all around watch for work and maybe some personal outings.

Out of a dire need for a watch I " rambo'd" into a store and picked up the timex automatic watch witht he black face.  I've heard varied reviews about this watch and they all seem to fit.  If it is basically a beater watch than I would probably look into getting it exchanged for a different one.  From personal wear the dial for the watch is quiet large as is the face itself.  while wearing it for the whole day I actually have a bit of a mark on my hand from the dial after typing.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks...

 It depends whether you want quartz or automatic.  For under $250, I'd recommend a Seiko automatic or perhaps an Orient.  Lots of choices for quartz in that range too.

An Orient would be a great watch to start with - check out Island Watch (click icon on left of page)... and welcome aboard 3T!  hand6.gif

Thanks for the quick replies.  I'll double check the Orient watches.  I am looking for an automatic and I have been known to be a little rough with my watches :?.  The Open Heart looks quite interesting in black.

I agree on the Orient watches and then Seiko in that price range for a automatic and maybe a few others. :cool:

But yea many options for a quartz. Sounds like you want a sturdy and dependable casual wear watch. Though there are some rather nice looking dive watches out there too.

Over at Island watch that was mentioned also check out the links to Arbutus, Junkers, and Trias they have some rather good watches in that price range also.

Or if you have a brand or watch name in mind let us know someone may be able  find it online for you. Good luck and welcome aboard. ;)

In terms of brands i'm a little lost as there seems to be so many.  For example in relation to cars it can be inferred that the Rolex falls in the Bentley, Mercedes class, but what of the others you have mentioned (Trias, Seiko etc).  Again thanks for your help on this one.

Well, Yugo comes to mind.... heh.. jk...  The Seiko and Orients etc fall in the very reliable, no nonsense category like a Chevy truck for example (imho), er, make that Toyota truck...

 I think in the $250 price range, you should not be looking for prestige but rather the type of watch you want and the style.  There are many well made watches in the $250 range but none of them really compare to the prestige brands.  Keep in mind Seiko also makes watches that run into the thousands, easily up to snuff with say, a Rolex.  In my opinion a lot of the prestige brands can get away with charging so much because of their marketing and preceived reputation (in reality their product is nicer, but not say, *ten* times nicer to justify the price).

It sounds like your preference is for dress watches - in that case, perhaps a Seiko 5 or Orient 3 Star would be appropriate going with those two brands.

I'd check out the Orient watches for sure, and the Vostok Europe. The N1 Rockets on the steel bracelet are awesome; as is the blue face K3 on bracelet. I've sold loads of these to close friends; they all love them.

Or, how about this puppy? It's my new fave!

Thanks-

I am looking for more of a reliable and casual watch, (if I could only afford a more expensive one rev_smile.gif

The Orient, Arbutus and Vostok are looking great. Thanks for all of the input. More and more options now!!!

On a side note I just found one of my late fathers watches a Citizen Seven. Anyone know the history of this watch?

First off, welcome to 3T. Nice to have you on board.

Stictly my personal opinion, but why not get yourself a nice Swicc Auto. Agreat one can be found at this link. Just a few $ over where you want to be at.

This is a great watch which meet your criteria, I believe. The Tissot line is a real value, too. Are you looking for new or used. You can get a good amount of info by checking:

This will give you a good idea of what is circulating and street values. Enjoy the hunt!!

Don't know much about the Citizen, but I can say from my recent purcase that I love my Orient.  And Marc treated me very fairly and very fast shipping.

I would say for that $250 you could not go wrong with an Orient.  Mine was a little more than the $250, but hey I still love it.

I just picked up an Orient with 3 stars on the dial( saturday) It is a midsize watch and very classy with a black face in ss.Also day and date at 3.I agree that a seiko 5 om a steel bracelet might be right up your alley.I have two Seiko 5's but i am not into metal bracelets  for the most part. I have the military model and the sport model.

In the $250 range (they may be slightly more now - street price) there is only one watch to buy.  Casual enough for jeans and dressy enough for the office...the Swiss Made Tissot PRS516 Automatic.  It comes in Blue, black and white dials with an excellent SS bracelet...ETA2824-2 movement, of course.  In the world of Swiss Made automatics, I believe that this watch is the biggest bang for the buck you can get!!!hand6.gif

Because...I am brilliant and you know after all these years, it is the watch I always recommend for a Swiss Automatic in this price range!

You can definitely get a nice Swiss Automatic for that price.  I'm currently wearing my Tissot LeLocle Roman Numeral in white, as I type.  Picked it up yesterday for $225.00.

Seiko and Orient would be my next choices.

For what it's worth, I would put it like this... (in order of personal preference)

SWISS:
Tissot = BMW (for the price of a Volkswagen!)
Rolex = Bently
Omega = Mercedes
Tag = Audi

JAPAN:
Seiko = Toyota, as well as Lexus for their higher end stuff
Orient = Honda and Acura
Citizen = Nissan, and Infinity
Invicta = Subaru

Just my humble opinions, and I hope I didn't offend anyone's watches or automobiles!
