in the last 30 years. "Why do you collect whatches"?Of course watch collectors never ask me this question, but those who can't appreciate beauty can't understand why I collect watches. I have some problem answering the question because I have many reasons for collecting watches. I wonder if you guys are ever asked why you collect watches and what is your answer.

Good question Hamilton...  I've been collecting for a little over 3 years now or so.

Sometimes I think it's more for the thrill of the hunt and the acquisition; the anticipation of knowing something's incoming - like birthdays and Christmas anytime you want it.

There's also a certain satisfaction of having something that only a small number of people in the world have - limited editions really get the ticker pumping.

And then there's the appreciation of the complexitiy of a mechanical movement and what went in to building it by hand - some movements are really works of art.

And, oh yeah, they can really be chick magnets...

Yea and I have gone to a rather generic and numb responce to it. :)

"Why dose anyone collect anything. They like it for some reason and find joy in it"

Becoming  a smart ass the older I get I guess. Better than my youthful reply. " For the sake of because" LOL :D

Hah... better to be a smart ass than a dumb ass; or so my father always told me.  Never was quite sure what he meant... :?

A quartz watch can be beautiful but a mechanical watch is like a beating heart, the thrill of the hunt is there for me as well.

I get asked this question a lot. I also get asked why do you need more than one watch? Others have said I only paid ten dollars for this, and it tells time just as good as your more expensive watch. I have run the gamut of responses, from ignoring them, to saying stuff like, you rather have children, I'd rather have watches. It usually comes down to my mood at the time. I do notice that it is always men and never women who ask me, I wonder why????:P

I am fascinated by the amazing microtechnology that goes into constructing a mechanical watch and enjoy the fact that watchmaking has a deep historical relevance to society. Watches are beautiful and functional.

The thrill of the hunt is anoter factor. It is great fun to search for the elsusive piece which will bring great satisfaction when procurred.

And why so many?? Simply put, variety is the spice of life and I find a watch can change my outlook and the way I feel for the day.

I had an old friend ask why CJ and I spent so much money on watches when they are basically just adornaments we wear much like jewelry. Well, I am not a big jewelry type guy and never thought of the watch as adornament. It always struck me as a tool. He said we were nuts... Of course a few minutes later he barked at someone for stepping on his $300 shoes!

I understand your friend's pain, I hate when people step on my shoes. I don't know why, but I like to collect shoes too. So far I have 21 pairs, same maker, model and color. I love that shoe. I know, it doesn't make any sense. I shoudl've spend the money on watches, it would made more sense.

I've taken to just saying "because I like them"  If they seem interested then I can go on about the reasons why I collect them but it just comes down to what you like...or rather what I like ;)

So Steve, which did you decide on? subtlelaugh.gif
As to the why do you collect question...I find it rather irritating, so I just answer it with another question that shuts it down.  If they are particulary obnoxious about it, I simply say, "I don't know.  Why did you marry such an ugly woman?"  toon1.gif  But that's just me!!!mistake.gif

I think it is because they are envious of the freedom to choose and accumulate items of choice. The average guy has to adopt his spouses priorities of home and children first and has little left over for indulgences. As for women they usually have a surplus of shoes, clothes, cosmetics, etc. and don't wish to invite criticism of their faults.

I knew a man with a great ploy for collecting stuff. He would tell his wife he was in a midlife crisis and needed to acquire things to keep his mind off women. It worked.

With a face like that how can anyone resist.  Ilove your dog too!! And mine... and CJ's... but not that little hypo-allergenic yipper that lives down the block!!
