Just made me think, looking at the plethora of dive watches on these forums, how many of us actually dive on a regular basis? I must admit, I'm a pilot (though not my current day job) and enjoy flying light airplanes, seaplanes, microlights and ultralights. So whilst I love to go up, I rarely go down to the depths of the ocean. My reason for using dive watches is that I simply prefer them over pilot chronographs, which I find a bit unneccessary. I know a few pilots who do use the latter but not one of them ever uses the slide rule bezel for flight calculations. I did once own a Breitling which I fiddled with a bit but soon went back to my standard tools and left the slide rule on the watch well alone...Darn thing just used to make me go cross-eyed. How about you folks? Last edited on Thu Nov 22nd, 2007 05:26 pm by |

The closest I get to diving is giving the kids a bath! I just like the clean lines, and the typically stainless steel construction. |

Gotta say, love your Oris and Limes watches, canadajo. Great looking pieces! Well, looks like most of us are in the same boat...well, maybe not a boat...same bath.. |

Have not dived since a shark encounter in the Bay of Acapulco in 1962...I was okay, but my guide got nailed. That said, I now firmly believe that when one enters the ocean, they immediately go from the top to the bottom of the food chain. I love the style of dive and military/pilot watches...while I am an instrument rated single engine/land pilot, I have never used a watch for anything other than measuring fuel consumption and switching tanks. There are onboard and hand-held GPS and computers, not to mention timing clocks for approaches. Looking at a watch while fly is distracting and disorienting! |

Very true. I do sometimes time approaches with one, though, but you can do that with a dive watch. Microlights tend not to be equipped with much in the way of instrumentation but they have what you need to get from A - B with VFR. Here's a pic when I was flying a seaplane in Taby just outside of Stockholm in Sweden. I was actually just completing my seaplane rating in that shot. The watch I had on that day was a GMT Master II, if I remember right. ![]() Last edited on Fri Nov 23rd, 2007 02:20 pm by |

Bit OT, but here's a couple of short movies of us messing with microlights, in case anyone's interested. One is with a flying rubber boat, as they called it in Sweden: http://www.flysports.se/files/111_clip201.mov http://www.flysports.se/files/118_trikep02.mov http://www.flysports.se/files/116_clip702.mov Turn your computer speakers on if you have any..;) The last one was a friend of mine over who took his trike over to Thailand to fly.. |

I haven't gone scuba diving since I was first married and we did a scuba tour on our honeymoon, though I did dive while in college. That was quite a while ago :D As others have mentioned, I just like the look and inherent toughness of a dive watch, I have 2 boys who like to play rough. Plus I usually take a dive watch when camping with the Boy/Cub Scouts as both our council camps have swimming activities. Cheers, Griff |

Not a diver, but I do not mind getting my watches wet as that was what they are designed for. I can understand how most folks might not dive or even go swimming with their watches, but we all wash our hands right? Right? A little water won't hurt the watch. |

Not only do I dive with my Doxas.......I have nearly given up my wrist computer!! I have found that diving with the dive-watch is so much more enjoyable. Actually, I use both unless I am going 40ft or less. Dive in mine often, but that being said 95% of the time the gaskets for diving come in handy keeping fine dust out of the case. Dealing with extreme weather conditions and variations in temp. the gaskets of the case and screw down crown come in handy. When dealing with fine dust, the crown set up of the Zeno Army Diver is very sub-par due the nature of the design. It allows the dust and grit to have direct access to the seals, and the dust grinds the seals every time the watch is wound or set. The compression of the seals on the crown stem is not sufficient to ensure a long term seal, given the oxidation and mechanical wear of the seals. If you are exposed to extreme conditions a screw down crown will serve the user more often than any other setup on most dive watches. |

I don't dive but I don't hesitate to use my dive watches for recreational swimming. IMHO the design features are wasted if you're going to baby the watch. The watch wants to work... work it!! Its akin to the guy who buys a sports car but won't take it to the redline. Use it or lose it!! |
