A short lexicon in a gruen watch instruction book states that anything less than 7 microns of gold plate is known as goldtone. 7 microns or above is called gold plate. So called "swiss gold layering" of Invicta fame and other propritary techniques are actually vapor dispersion plating (PVD) which Wikpedia says only requires 2 to 3 microns of gold plate. Anyone, can such a meager amount of plate hold up well?
