Just a little rant about the current trend to make watches bigger and thicker. It is winter in most parts of the country afterall. The cuffs on my shirts just won't button over these recent "barbells" that pose as time keepers. Am I the only one that appreciates the elegance of a thinner more conservativly designed watch? My Maurice Lacroix is 7mm thick, my Limes GMT is 9mm and I have a Jacques Lemans two hand quartz that is a sveldt 6mm thin. They are more comfortable to wear than the 46mmx16mm thick behemouths out there and that seems to be the new norm. Am I just becoming my father in my old age or are there a few sympathizers out there. Maybe I'm just turning into an old grouch. Or does everyone need to attend a "big watchaholic anonimous" meeting?

Shirt, Cuffs? Winter?

No Problem here in AZ.

I am working up to putting on a T-shirt though. It is a bit chilly today. subtlelaugh.gif

There are still plenty of the traditional sized watches out there.  I think that it's great that there are so many choices in the larger sized watches.  I f I am wearing a shirt with cuffs I wear a dress watch anyway.  I think you look ridiculous with a large watch like a diver in these situations.  It's like wearing sneakers with a suit, very unproffesional.

I agree with you Edgel. Keeping the focus to 43-44mm max and 12mm thick for the most part. I passed on the Monstrum for that reason though such a nice looking watch.

My Ball is 43mm but i think only 9mm thick which works perfect with long sleeve shirts.

You have my vote:DThumbsUp02.gif

Edgel... it is inevitable... wea re all becoming our Father's. It won't be long unitl we are all grumpy old men and the watches will all be the size of a freaking 12000 Charmex.

Being a goofball and living in a cold climate doesn't stop me from wearing short sleeves year round. I gotta show that puppy. and when I do need long sleeves I want my watch to show. I am a vain and shallow creature and love having my wrist wear out in the open... I wear no other adornments!!

Having said that I will say there are times I don't feel like lugging around a ginormous piece and other times when I lust for a large Flavor-Flav watch... fickle I guess!!

I do agree with TD in that I think the Fireman might just be the perfect size.

As you all know, I have my share of big o watches.  I agree that the Fireman is a good size. My SMP which is 300M. water resistant is only 10.5mm thick so it isn't necessary to make them so thick for water resistance and the Yacht-Master is about the same. My SuperOcean is 14mm thick and relegated to the back of the watch box until next summer. I know I'll change my tune about next May.

GET OFF MY LAWN  subtlelaugh.gif

Im hearing ya, the cuff link issue is a problem. I Reserve the smaller mm watches for Dressing Up only, and the BIG watches are for Casual Wear.

I am so used to the BIG watches at this time, that when I wear a Rolex or smaller, I just dont feel adequate, I know its in my mind.

I also find that as Im getting older, the BIG watches are so much more easy to see, go figure.

Cheers

Speaking of Trend Sized Watches,

Do you think Rolex will ever make anything larger than they're current size watches????

The very largest watch I own is a Russian Poljot Aviator at 45mm. I can't see myself ever buying or wearing anything larger than 45mm. The sweet-spot size for me is 42-43mm.

Maybe it is the fact that the population is getting bigger with each new generation that watches are growing too. I dunno. But, 50+mm does seem to be way too big for some of us. mistake.gif

Big watches are here to stay enough that they were given a category at Basel last yearhand6.gif....I buy all sizes depending on the style of watch...I don't discriminate....they call me Chief Wearemall....Big,fat,thin n' small subtlelaugh.gif

Ya know - I hear each and every one of you. I wear long sleeves and cufflinks every day of the working week - and after hours and on the weekends my bare white arms are adorned with all manner of time-wear - usually one at a time...

Sweet spot for me is again that 42-44mm size that makes it easy for a 49er (49 years old, that is...) tell the time without squinting. It sounds like such a simple thing... but it really does make a helluva difference. I wear 6 to 12mm high watches during the week, and unleash the monsters after hours and on weekends - simply because I think that it looks more professional to wear those sorts of watches during office hours in the law firm...  It is all about my perceptions of myself, because I am sure that clients probably don't give a hoot.

And that doesn't mean I am saying anyone else should do this - different professions and tastes mean different rules and different choices and I say more power to those that can make a style choice any time of the day or week! But I have to agree that there are some beautiful, simple, not too large timepieces out the there (like IWC 40 to 42mm with a simple sub-seconds and/or a date, Patek and many others of that type that are, to some eyes, restrained, purposeful, classy and "timeless classics") that out-sophisticate many of my other watches - and I am more likely to wear those to work.

To each their own - and for every watch there is a legion of admirers. I like 'em all - but I would not wear my Monstrum under a dinner suit - even if I was wearing sneakers!

Sorry for the ramble - good topic this one! IanM hand6.gif

I wear dress shirts to the office 95% of the time as well, and I agree that the larger (42mm+) watches can sometimes get in the way.  But, it doesn't really stop me from wearing them anyways. subtlelaugh.gif

I find myself spending less and less time with my smaller watches both during the say and after hours.  I enjoy looking down and seeing something substantial on my wrist that sort of stands out.  Even my "dress" watch is at least 42mm and 15+mm tall.

I remember ranting several years ago about the size of watches as a 38mm to 40mm kinda guy, but the designs over the last few years have made me change my mind in several respects.  Now, I try to keep in the 40mm t0 42mm range, but the call of designs by ORSA, ENZO, Stowa and others simply overwhelms me at times...the my collecting grows in more than one direction.  To me, it is not what size it is, but how it "wears"...ie: the "look and feel" on my wrist!

Same for me... nothing smaller than 42mm.  44-45mm is ideal.  22-24mm lugs preferred.

Hmmm...never really gave any conscious thought to wearing a "large" watch or a "small" watch. I've been married to an ex-fashion designer for 36 years so I was "trained" very early to wear the "appropriate" watch with various types of dress. That means a gold JLC "Sun & Moon" Reverso on a deployant-buckled alligator strap with a suit (rarely!) and an Enzo on a thick silicone strap with jeans and a sweat shirt (most of the time).

Of course, I have also worn the JLC with jeans and a sweatshirt but that's another story....;).

I have to agree with Steve and Ken, but with big watches 44mm plus I really like the lug to be 24mm, just my preference.  Do you guys see more of a push for 24mm lug.

Hey teddy... I like the 24mm better too because of the availibility of straps you can put on it...  anytime you see someone designing a watch on forum, they always ask for 24mm lugs...

What's really bad is that you wake up one day and go to your watch box (or wherever you keep them) and the watch with the smallest diameter suddenly looks childlike!
"I can't wear that thing! It looks like a kids watch!" you think. You sell it off the next day.
And it was a 38mm! face4.gif Every year that childlike diameter gets larger.

I'm starting to think the monstrum is just too big for my liking. So far I've only worn it twice since getting it. Kinda sucks cause I love the dial and caseback.

It doesn't matter to me, I have from 35mm up to 45mm.  My favorite size is around 40-42mm though.  Whenever I wear one of my Bulova Accutrons they do look kinda small though, and that was considered a good sized watch in the 60's!

Cheers,
Griff

well I'm sorry I missed this one over the holidays but I'll add my .02 anyways.  I'm a smaller guy so I have no business wearing anything big. It just doesn't look good on my wrist. Which is a real shame because that eliminates a lot of great watches.  I've found that I can push 41mm depending how the dial and case are laid out.  Typically I see that the thickness is related to the width, they're usually proportionate because of complications and asthetics so the smaller watches I wear aren't overly thick and it all works out.  While celebraties and fashion may be pushing the idea of Big watches as the trend to follow I'll be looking for the 38-41mm sizes and hoping to find interesting and affordable styles in this range.  This may be why I always look at vintage watches lately.  I'm all for the great designs being produced but I wish they'd consider a smaller version in their line ups as well....or.... if any of you want to part with your smaller watches I may be interested;)

I say 46mm should be the cut-off point. Everything else begins to look ghetto fabulous.  As for the thickness, I like a nice chunky watch. So much that I gave a friend a 1968 SeaMaster for free as I just did not like the lack of height/thickness on the case.

With a 9 inch wrist a 40mm looks like a ladies watch on me. 44 - 47mm is my ideal size although I have to be careful with bracelets and straps that they will fit me.Don seems to have the only 24mm XXL straps in the watch world, and boy oh boy am I glad his price is very reasonable as I can't afford custommade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
