After 4 weeks of patiently cleaning the movement and
waiting for the Elgin 532 No.5 Balance Stem to arrive.
I finally took the watch home today.

It is my 1942 Elgin DeLuxe 555 17 Jewels 4 Adjustments
Elgin USA hand wound. The previous Elgin which was
shown from an earlier post, dates from 1946.

What makes this special?

The dial is in original condition with no patina.

However, this Elgin that I am posting tonight has a round
movement.

I couldn't get close enough to photograph the name
on the dial. It doesn't matter is the beauty of this
timepiece, that sets it apart from the others.

Cheers,
Simon

Simon,

Your watch is beautiful. I like you as a young fella had appreciation for old things. Now I'm just old. Keep it up your interest in the older time pieces and some day you can pass the torch.

Thank you for the kind comments,ncvol17.

Hi Rod, I gave my other watches that I had posted
recently in the New Arrivals to my 15 year old nephew.

Thanks Jeff, what you're referring to is the
Patek Philippe ref. 2442.

I think that is the perfect watch
which really goes well with a monkey suit,
Cohiba Seleccion Reserva and
Louis XIII Black Pearl Limited Ed.
de Remy Martin. subtlelaugh.gif

Thanks dragnattack.

After using a little dab of Brasso metal polish
on the whole watch. I'm can't believe how bright
the watch looks.

Note:

Brasso only works on either stainless steel
solid gold or gold filled watches.

 Cheers,
 Simon

Thanks Ken for reminding me that Brasso also works on brass.  dog smile.gif

Thanks Mark,for the kind comments.
However, some of the watches that you have aren't bad
at all.

I just couldn't find the time to stay logged into 3-T,
during work hours to comment on all of them.

Of all the vintage timepieces I've owned, this is the
nicest. This is my current daily wearer for the time being.

Cheers,
Simon

Thanks Stew.

I've always had a sentimental fondness for the
Art Deco Elgins,Bulovas, Gruen and Hamiltons.
These timepieces all had the high end
Made in USA watch movements.

An Elgin De Luxe 17 Jewel with an Adjusted in 4 Position
hand wound movement,is a rare treat in today's watch market.
Remember that in those days, the technology
was expensive but the cost of manual labor was cheap.

If a watch company were to produce this similar
movement in today's watch market. I can safely
say that the cost of production and manufacturing
would be astronomical. The cost of manual labor
is expensive but the technology is cheap.

During the 1940's and 1950's
the Federal Government in the U.S. imposed import
duties on watches entering the country with
"Adjusted in 2 Positions."
Therefore,many Swiss brands wrote
Unadjusted on the movement to be exempt
from import duty.

A Good Example is:

The 1945-50 Longines Caliber 9L was a 17 Jewel
Unadjusted hand wound. This is actually a
movement that is Adjusted in 2 Positions.

Cheers,
Simon
