I just bought this Friday afternoon, 9-3-2010 First the pics!       Here's a quick mini-review of my latest acquisition, a vintage Rolex Submariner, model 5513. This is one of several Submariner models worn in early James Bond films. If that subject interests you, here's a great link: http://jamesbond.ajb007.co.uk/rolex-submariner/ The model 5513 began poduction prior to the release of models with the date complication, and remained in the line for those that didn't want a date until around 1988 when it was discontinued. To this day, a no date, no COSC sub can be purchased, in fact I understand a new model with these (lack of) features will come out soon. Obviously it doesn't have a cyclops, and since it is the non-COSC model, it has the cleanest, simplest dial. It uses the same caliber 1520 movement, though, which hacks, runs at 19,800vBh and is considered by many to be one of the best all-around movements by the brand. This watch had a full service in 2008 and certificate or no, at +5, it's within COSC specs. Not bad for a vintage watch! This one has an 8 million serial number, which dates it's manufacture at 1984 (or so). At this time the lume was tritium, which is why at the bottom of the dial it states SWISS T<25. This was a replacement for Radium, which was the first luminous material Rolex used. After the 5513, they went to luminova. This model also has the domed acrylic crystal, and was made of 316L. The 14060 which replaced it, used sapphire and 904L steel.

Very Very nice! I also have an early 1980's 16800. I made the mistake ten years ago when I sent it to RUSA in NY by replacing the original dial and the hands. The hands you'd never know but the new dial has the platinum rings around the lums, oh well. Still have the original bracelet and boxes too. I think it's funny when fellas want to know if it's ok to shower with their Sub on, I figure I have done it literally over 12,000 times! Congratulations, Rod in Va.

Nice 5513. A real classic. There's a lot to like in the simple dial. I think this is the Sub of the Roger Moore Bond.. may be Lazenby too.  Big congrats on the vintage Sub!

Great looking watch! The ref.5513 is what I call a "sleeper" model is largely ignored by the buying public. Those in the know, would appreciate this beauty for the historical value of the 660ft / 200m script underneath the Submariner name. If the 660ft / 200m was printed in red,this is the watch that all serious collectors should be looking for. This timepiece in my opinion,with the white script are still reasonably affordable at the moment. I could only speculate that prices would soon increase. Speaking of movies, Robert De Niro wore a similar 5513 in the 1978 film The Deer Hunter. During the filming of the Russian Roulette scene, there's a 18kt Rolex GMT on the table. Feels quite a bit smaller than my 47mm Oris and the 45.5mm PO, but it's certainly more comfortable to wear. I get used to whatever I wear though, 40-47mm all works for me with an 8" wrist. The non-dated models are my favorites I've been thinking long time about it. Still the usual sub look a bit little to me with it's 40mm... A 44mm version would be perfect.
