I picked up this U-Boat 45mm from Ashford.com a month ago and it was a great transaction. I was drawn to the design of this big Italian style, but stuck with 45mm and didn't go with the larger 53mm. One of the things that I couldn't get use to was the bright colored leather strap, so I purchased an Italian rubber strap, cut it, drilled it, sanded it, and got it to fit perfectly with the U-Boat steel piece that I wanted to keep as it is part of the overall design. Here are some photos:

forgot the back view. This rubber strap only shows the holes you need and the butterfly clasp covers that one up.

I see the price already went up quite a bit on this one. I bought this in February. The lume is a weak point, the hands are ok, but the dial is not good... but I didn't buy this one for the lume.

I think the reason for the poor lume is that in order to get bright lume you need to print white on the dial first, then pile the lume onto the white, and I think Italo Fontana does not like the piled on lume look, he probably prefers the smooth printing which equals poor lume. I think they should learn from BENARUS on how to apply lume on a dial.

Looking good Steve but as many around, I thought that the lume was TOP with those huge markers...
Too bad that it isn't.
But if you are happy, so that's nice.
Don't want to be a buzzkiller but in my opinion, 1530$ for poor lume, a 2824-2 ETA and only 100-meters rating for a diver...
Not such a good deal.

Boy...that is the TRUTH Steve...I know for a fact that Benarus could teach a number of manufacturers how to apply high performing lume on a dial!!!thumbsup.gif

This isn't a dive watch, it is a fashion watch, it comes on leather. The price is high and that is because U-Boat is spending a lot on marketing and product placement. Is a Panerai Luminor Base Pam 00000 a good deal with an ETA movement at $5,000?

At this price point people buy the brand, not the technical specs. I bought a U-Boat because I like the design of the case, dial, and crown. I have plenty of higher spec technical dive watches that cost much less.

Really great looking U boat. 45mm is the perfect size. The 53mm would look like a clock on your wrist, with the huge dial opening.

Good looking strap mod, Can't understand why they would put that bright orange strap on a basic military design.

Totally agree about the Panerai/eta at 5000buks, and I allways been critizing this openly, in and out the forum: Just ask William/Watchdaddy(that I salute by the way...)cat28.gif
I also like this same design and that's why I bought my Russian Shark.
But I just can't put so much money for a name or a brand because I considerate that from this price point, specs have to follow a minimum.
I've never seen any status in U-boat but maybe I'm living too far from big towns...

I don't think I made my point... which was if I had $5,000 to spend on the PAM, I would... even if it has the ETA. I would be buying the Panerai name and style, not the specs. And I would know for myself that it is real and not a fake. I think buying a brand is a big part of watch collecting. And just a side note...Panerai doesn't even use double dome sapphire like we do, so I know where they cut corners to save a dollar.

Steve, I don't think that Panerai is a right exemple on a Big-Bang for the buks when we speak eta versions or even inhouse...Panerai is overpriced and very known for that.
For me, the name isn't everything.
From and above 1500$, I start to target inhouse movements on my side. So if I was about to crack 5000buks for a watch, it would be 100% inhouse or nothing.
I also saw the PAM 359 for 6500buks BNIB, so if you are about to make a jump around the 5000buks, it may be worth to put 1500 more to get a new inhouse or buy a used one for 5000 maybe...
I personnaly think that the eta versions of Panerai will decrease much in value after a while, when them inhouse models will start to show-up cheaper on the used market: Just my feeling...

Hehehe, yeah, I know that and your are forgiven for your impatience alsotoon1.gif
Seriously, the important point is that you had a great price for your Panerai: You may be then lucky enough to use it a full year and resell it for the same price or even above it AND buy the 359 of your dreams...
If you should ever invest big: Target inhouse bro! Nothing else...

Very robust watch, Steve. Big Congrats! What's not to like about the U-Boat? I've been looking at the big Thousands of Feet model since mid 2010 but something always gets in the way.

I like what you did about the strap but maybe I would have worn the bright strap a little bit more.

I am drawn to those colorful 1001 models also. just a fun design, and inspired me to make the numbers and markers larger on our new Ti47.
