Well, I'm getting married next weekend and my fiance has been secretly putting away money each month for the past 5 years to buy me a "wedding watch". Yesterday we went to the local watch store to get my gift. I've always admired the Rolex SeaDweller/Submariner and the Omega Speedmaster Pro. I've owned lots of watches over the years (and still own quite a few) but I've never owned either the Submariner or a Speedmaster. My girlfriend told me to pick out any watch I liked (within reason) and she would pay for it. I wanted to pick out a watch that had a timeless design to it, as this was one I would never want sell. I own cool funky watches that may or may not go out of style, but those can always be traded off for something new and interesting. I put the SeaDweller on my left wrist and the Speedmaster Pro on my right wrist and wore them around the store for an hour as we looked at various pieces of jewellry. I liked them both equally...perhaps a very, very slight edge went to the Rolex, just because of it's cache and prestige factor. Even though my girlfriend told me not to include price as a deciding factor, I just couldn't accept the fact that the SeaDweller was going to be more than twice the price of the Speedy Pro, as the dealer would not discount at all on the Rolex, but they offered me a 31% discount on the Omega (which had a retail price that was much lower than the Rolex in the first place). In the end, I decided on the Speedmaster Pro....the standard version with the hesalite crystal and metal caseback. I did look at the Speedy with the sapphire crystal/display back but didn't feel the extra price was worth it for me. I suspect this will be my last watch purchase for a while now, as we want to be conservative with our finances and save money for a house. However, I do have 4 or 5 other watches in my collection that I will be able to sell/trade to generate funds for other fun watches. |

Hey, Pac, here's the watch for you. If your girlfriend hurries, she can pick it up off eBay for a mere $500,000.00! goodluck.gif |
