My most recent addition is my Seiko Spirit 013I just keep finding myself looking at it and finding reasons not to swap out to a beater.  Its a terrific watch.

Thanks.  I am really enjoying it.  When I got home today a package was waiting for me!  It contained an XL Croc grain leather strap for the Spirit that I've been waiting for now for a week.  I put it on immediately and it is MUCH more dressy and appropriate IMHO for this watch!

The dial is a white with a hint of grey in it.  The watch hacks and is manually windable in addition to being an auto.  There were some who persisted in saying it is a reworked 7 series Seiko movement.  All I can say is that in addition to hacking and manual wind capability the 6R15 has different bridges, pieces have some finishing, and the rotor is very different.  hand6.gif  I got it from Seiya in Japan.  Sad really, the Spirits are Japan-Only models:(

The photo really does not capture the rotor's verticle stripes at all.  The edges for many of the movement's bridges have a beveled edge to them and a more finished look than the 7 series watches I own too, including the 7005 movement which is far more refined than the 7s26/36.  It is amazing to me how little respect the Seiko movements receive from the general watch public (including many "WIS").:(

When I compare the entry level mechanical/auto watch of Seiko to the entry level mech/auto watch of some Swiss makers I see little difference in capabilities.  Finish on the movement is rougher in the entry level Seikos but the performance is equivalent and the durability is clearly on Seikos side.

Then you go up a notch and look at the overall performance of the next level of watch for Swiss and Seiko and the F&F and performance is equivalent.

You go to the highest level watches for mass produced (not PP but Breitling, Omega, Rolex) models and the Grand Seikos consistently are said to meet or exceed the F&F and performance standards.

At each level you have roughly equivalent performance, fit & finish, and quality.  However, you do have one HUGE difference.

COST!  Seiko wins at each and every performance level for cost with Mech/Auto watches and it is not even close!smile8.gif

By my standards this makes the Seikos superior purchases overall.  Do I own any Swiss watches - you know I do.  Why, styling in the main reason.  I've also found them more often discounted to realistic prices, and more readily obtainable in the US than anything but the 7 series and Quartz Seikos.

Thanks guys.  I'm building my argument for other places.  I'm also building an argument for continuing up the Seiko food chain.  I'm looking for a nice, clean, affordable King Seiko Hi-Beat model.cool10.gif

I had seen you post about buying for your friend on another list.  You take the most incredible photos!  You actually got the blue to come out on the hands - how did you do that?  I've saved your photos to my database on my watches because yours are SO much better than anything I can achieve.  What equipment do you use?

Thanks,

-Robert

Hi Robert, thanks for the compliment:). Actually I took many shots to get that. The hands need to be viewed at certain angle, with lightinng also at certain angle too.;) I did some minor touch up with the pics with Photoshop too. ;)

You mentioned it contained a Croc grained strap? Wow!face4.gif I got only a plain black leather strap from SEIKO. I think with a Black or Dark BLue Corc grain or genuine Croc will spark it right off!!!hand6.gif

I almost forgot, I was using a CANON 350D with a SIGMA 50mm macro lens. smile4.gif

Thanks for the information on the equipment you used.  I need to get a better camera.  I'm using a small low-end 5meg Sony that is terrific for shots of the children but isn't very good for Macro shots and has zero lighting control other than flash on-flash off.:(

I mentioned the Croc Black strap because I just got it in the mail.  The standard Cordovan strap is nice but FAR too short for me.  I believe that if your wrist is greater than ~7 1/4 inches (~185mm) the strap will be a disappointment.  So, I purchased an XL strap in Croc Grain black leather for $7 and added a $10 deployant.  I'm looking at getting a nice Cordovan Color Croc strap for it too.:P

XL straps (215mm+) are rather hard to find at descent prices.  I've been gathering information on companies that routinely stock them and sharing it on another list that has a forum devoted to Straps:)

Do you use a light box in your photography of the watches?

I tried my other Sony - only 1.3meg but it has laser tech for focus and seems to do a bit better job on closeups.
