Well, after the very disappointing experience with my Fortis, I'm pleased to say that my G-2 has totally exceeded my expectations.  I haven't been this inpressed with a watch in quite some time.  I'll give a full report after I wear it for a day or so, and check the lume tonight, but initial impressions are that it is a tremendous value.

More to come...

Beautiful. As many know I am not a chrono lover but Mitch did that one right. It is very impressive. The case is the same as the LM-3 and killer. That dial is beautiful as well. I have been very happy with all of my Ocean7 watches and overall it is my favorite brand. I have to say at least 50 % if not higher wrist time is dedicated to an Ocean7 Watch. Good choice and great pick up there!

Nice grab!! That is a great looking chrono!!

Hey, I hope your not down on Fortis, and I would suggest you consider the source. I feel bad because I am sure I told you that you wouldn't be disappointed by the watch and you most certainly are... with good reason!

Congrats Mark on a nice catch. I agree the G-2 is an impressive dive chrono. Don't you love the deep carbon fiber dial. hand6.gif

Thanks guys!

I'm still smiling from ear to ear about this watch.  It has the wrist presence and quality feel of a Doxa or Ball, at a quartz budget.

I'll give a brief review after one day...

Case: Impressive.  We all know this case is used by many, and rightly so.  It is well made, has interesting angles and shape, and is finished (brushed) perfectly.  The lug-lug length is not too long, which makes it conform to the wrist nicely without overlapping the wrist as many large watches do.  The size, while large, is not too large.  Looks impressive and chunky without crossing the line to ridiculous.

Bezel: Functionally perfect.  Probably the best feeling bezel I own with the possible exception of my T-Graph.  Easy grip, perfect alignment, perfect tension, zero slop, and 120 clicks that feel as refined as the tumblers of a safe.  Mitch's design is very pleasing, not radical or unique, but tool-like and pleasing to the eye.  I've owned far too many "dive" watches with bezels that were hard to grip, unpleasant or useless to use.  Not this one.

Bracelet: I don't need say any more about it, other than WOW.  You guys know the bracelet, screw links, heavy, 24mm, super quality clasp, and nice O7 badge.  If you examine the butterfly clasp closely, you can see it is a much higher grade than those found on many bracelets in a much higher price category.  Spectacular.

Dial:  Carbon fiber is gorgeous, and subtle, not "in your face" like some photos suggest.  Subdials are simple black which gives a nice contrast to the perfectly executed carbon fiber.  The layout of the dial markers, the thickness of the minute indices, the hands chosen, all are just right IMHO.  Mitch got this one right.  I've seen virtually the same watch made by MTM SpecOps, and the dial design and bezel choice looks like a train wreck, giving a cheap toy-like appearance.  The O7 looks balanced, clear, professional, and tool-like.  The use of orange is just right, with the skeleton plongeur hands, tipped box second hand, and "7" in the logo.  The only thing that would have made it better is a white on black date wheel.

Lume: Well, it is there, but not great.  I was warned about this so it comes as no surprise.  Given that everyone complained about the lume, I expected the worst, and am pleasantly surprised, it is better than expected.  Not great like Seiko, Citizen etc), but more like a Tissot or Orient Beast.

Movement: Quartz Ronda. All of the hands hit the indices perfectly, resets perfectly, and operates as it should.  Only caveat is that it only records to a one second accuracy, no split second subdial.  Fine with me as I have never need accuracy greater than one second, but at this price point, I would have liked to see a movement that records to a finer measurement as my other quartz chronos do (cheapos).

Overall, I rate this as one of my highest "bang for the buck" watches out of over 60 purchased in the past 15 months.  Citizen Ecozilla comes very close, but not as wearable or attractive IMHO.  It seems as though the $100 off coupon has disappeared, but even at the regular price of $449, this watch is a bargain and well worth the spend.

Hello Mark,

I agree with all of your comments.  I received my G-2 a week ago.  I would improve on two items:
  1. The Lumes - it's not bad but not best in class.  Maybe go with C3 "after-market" relume.
  2. The deployment / clasp is not very secured - if you rotate your fist.  It may unlatch.  I'm looking at changing it out to the "classic" diver watch clasp; double latch.
Overall - best value dive watch I have come across; even better than my Osra Sea Angler.  I am enjoying my G2!!!

Thanks,

cvo

First of all, Hello CVO. Nice to see another local here. I am in the BR area as well over in Gonzo. Glad to see more Ocean7 watches local.

Mark, nice review and I am glad you like your Ocean7. As most know here I am a big enthusiast of the brand. I have reviewed the LM-3 which your G-2 is based on. I had reported my only disappointment with that watch is the lume. I have to say that as you state it isn't that bad but then again Mitch spoiled me with the LM-1 and it's lume. After receiving the LM-2 the other day I am now even more spoiled. It is great. C-1 lume is just a bit anemic compared to a good layer of C-3.

CVO, I had never had a problem with my bracelet popping open. I guess I am lucky to be able to remove 3 links and it fits perfect. I can see where if you wear it snug it might happen. I have had 3 watches with this bracelet though and never a problem with it. It sounds to me like there could be an issue with the latching mechanism though.

Thank you for the welcome - it is nice to have support from other Ocean 7 owners.

Mark - I agree, it may be that I have my bracelet too snug (that is the way I perfer it).  That is what Mitch is thinking also - but I am set on changing my clasp to the "classic" type.  If you have any recommendations, please let me know.  I live in St. Francisville 25 miles north of Baton Rouge.

Thanks,

cvo
