Well, I finally got my furnace building done.  Started on it back in oct but, winter set in early and didnt get good weather till last week to get it finished.  This is where we were last march.

Here we finished the framing last week.

Finally with the tin on.  Its just a 20'x20'  I have to do some wiring inside and build a work bench.  The hard part is done.  Now to get it filled up with firewood. yahoo.gif

Next project is building a chicken coop.  I have 25 one day old chicks coming on june 1st.  Gonna try my hand at selling some fresh eggs.

Hey if you need a insight on how to raise chickens my dad has been doing it as a fulltime hobby for 10 years. He also sells eggs on ebay too. I think last time we talked he was telling which ones he thinks produce the best eggs and are the easiest to maintain. Also get some owl traps to so they won't run off with your chickens. And the best animal my dad has found out as a guard for them is a Manx http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manx_(cat) . My dad also builds his own incubators and chicken coops so he is a hard core "chicken man".

Thanks guys,  I am by no means a carpenter but I guess I can hold my own.  I have built a room in my basement (my antique radio room), an addition to the house, an addition to my one garage and now this building.  This was my first free standing building.  I am only one quarter of an in out of square in the one corner.  So, no too bad I guess.  Fill is coming tomorrow so I can get the ground graded up to the floor and get a ramp up to the rear sliding door.

As for the chickens, We have had turkeys in the past.  Just going to be a new experience selling eggs.  I have white, brown, and tinted layers coming.  Dont know how well the tinted will sell but we will see.

Tony, it is to house my furnace and firewood.  I use the furnace to heat my house and 2 buildings.  I live on the top of a mountain and the wind is pretty wicked in the winter so the building gives me some protection from the elements while firing the furnace and gives me a place to keep my firewood nice and dry.

Thanks Oscar.  The chickens are just going to be a hobbie.  Just so I sell enough eggs to pay for the feed and such will make me happy.  If I make a few extra bucks at it then great. You never know what it may turn into. hand6.gif

Sorry Tony, I just realized I didnt really answer your question. The furnace is a wood boiler.  I have water lines running about  4 feet underground to my house and a 32'x48' car shop and a 40'x45' tractor shop.  There are pumps on the furnace that circulate the hot water to all the buildings.  I even get my domestic hot water in the house from the furnace via a heat exchanger.  We have endless hot water.  I keep the furnace going in the summer also for the domestic hot water also.  I only have to put wood in the furnace every 6 days in the summer.

This outdoor furnace is one of the best things I have done and highly recommend to anyone if you have to heat a home.  I used to pay almost $7000 a year for heat.  This past year I spent $1800.  Once I get all my projects caught up I going to start harvesting trees on the 50 acre wooded lot we own to save even more cash.

If any of you have any ?s about outdoor furnaces PM me.  The fellow who sold me this furnace is selling his home.  If he moves out of the area I am hoping to get his dealership.  That is how much I believe in these things.

As long as the body is not more than 5 feet long. ;)  I am friends with the local undertaker and he was out here when we first got the furnace.  When he was looking inside it, the wife made the comment that "you can fit a body in there.", I dont think he found it very amusing.
